The invention relates to a method for regenerating reaction lubricant residues containing acid organic lubricants refused and processed during cold forming and multivalent metal ions and phosphate ions, wherein said reaction lubricant residues undergo the following procedural steps: a) precipitating metal ions from the metal organic compounds by adding phosphoric acid and/or acid phosphoric acid esters; b) dissolving water-soluble impurities by adding water; c) separating the solids from the lubricant components and from the aqueous phases that are incompatible with the oily lubricant components, and whereby d) acid phosphoric acid esters for adjusting the free acid at a value of less than 10 points and for adjusting a total acidity point value of less than 70 is adjusted at a free acid. total acidity ratio having a value in the range of 0.15 to 0.5. The separation indicated in step c) preferably occurs by means of a centrifuge at 2,000 to 3,000 g, especially at 8,000 to 15,000 g.

Disclosed is a lubricant carrier salt for facilitating the cold forming of a workpiece of iron or steel, based on boric acid and/or alkali borate. The salt has an additional content of aliphatic di- or tricarboxylic acid, which either is unsubstituted or substituted by at least one hydroxyl group, and/or of alkali salts thereof, the weight ratio of boric acid/alkali borate to the acid is (5 to 15):1. Especially appropriate carboxylic acids are malonic acid, maleic acid, succinic acid, tartaric acid and/or citric acid.Inorganic or organic thickening agents, such as bentonite and/or polysaccharide, aluminate and/or silicate, dispersants, lubricants and/or antioxidants as well as titanium salt can be contained as additional components in the lubricant carrier salt of the invention.Also disclosed is a method for facilitating the cold working of a workpiece of iron or steel, in which the lubricant carrier salt is applied to the workpiece, provided if desired with a phosphate coating, out of an aqueous solution or dispersion with a concentration of 5 to 30 wt-% and with a temperature of 80 to 100.degree. C. by the immersion or pass-through method.

Disclosed is a solid or aqueous lubricant concentrate used for the cold forming of metals, which, with reference to the solids content, including a) 20 to 50 parts by weight polyethylene with a softening point above 120.degree. C. and a particle size int he range between 0.1 and 50 .mu.m; b) 20 to 8 parts by weight polyacrylate with a molecular weight of 4,500 to 10,000 and c) 2 to 8 parts by weight styrene/acrylic acid copolymer with a molecular weight of 150,000 to 250,000 and a glass transition temperature of 45 to 55.degree. C., where, under the conditions of use, the acrylic acid component of the polymers in accordance with items b) and c) is predominantly present as salt of one or more inorganic cations, and the softening points of the individuals polymers are distributed over the temperature range defined by the limiting values of ambient temperature and 200.degree. C. The lubricant concentrate may contain homo-or copolymers or acrylic acid or the esters thereof with graded molecular weights as well as surfacant. Also disclosed is a method for facilitating the cold forming, where, by means of the lubricant concentrate, a lubricant film is applied on the workpiece from a dispersion having solids content of 5 to 25 wt-%.

The invention relates to a method for preparing workpieces suitable for phosphatizing for chipless cold forming by acid pickling, rinsing, drying and treatment with acid reaction lubricants containing phosphate ions. According to said method the workpieces are rinsed before drying with a solution which contains lactic acid, has a pH below 3 and preferably a temperature of between 60 and 80° C. Preferred embodiments of the invention consist of rinsing the workpieces with a solution which in addition contains phosphoric acid, has a lactic acid concentration of between 1 and 50 g/l and a weight ratio of lactic acid to phosphoric acid of between 1:9 and 9:1.

Disclosed is a process for the electroless deposition of a copper coating on an iron or iron alloy surface wherein the workpiece surface is contacted with a solution which contains hydrogen ions, 5 to 30 g/l Cu as well as 0.2 to 5 g/l Mg and preferably copper and magnesium with a weight ratio of Cu:Mg of (35 to 5):1 for a treatment time of 3 sec to 15 min at a temperature of the solution of 20.degree. to 65.degree. C. The invention also comprises a solid concentrate for preparing and replenishing the solution for carrying out the process, which consists of at least 85 wt-% CuSO.sub.4.5H.sub.2 O and MgSO.sub.4 (anhydrous) with a weight ratio of (35 to 5):1, and preferably contains in addition a maximum of 10 wt-% polyglycol and a maximum of 5 wt-% sodium chloride.
