    摘要: A method of and apparatus for, detecting an intrusion into a volume defined relative to a path across an opening along which path a closure member for the opening can be controllably displaced to define a gap in the opening, the gap being bounded on one side by the closure member and on the other side to the one side by a boundary member; the volume including at least one threshold region on at least one side of the path; the volume having as a base the threshold region and rising above the threshold region; a first group of at least two emitters of electromagnetic signals located on either the closure member or the boundary and directed into the volume and a second group of at least two receivers for electromagnetic signals located on the opposite side of the gap to the emitters; emissions from the emitters being directed into the volume but not directly towards the receivers; the emitters and receivers forming part of a network including processing means which form a compound sensor for use in monitoring operation of the closure member and for defining sensitivity to an intrusion into a region or regions of the volume; each emitter being adapted to direct a primary beam of e.m. radiation into the volume; each receiver being adapted to receive a secondary beam generated by the reflection of a primary beam from a target intruding into the volume; the method comprising the steps of: causing at least one of the emitters to emit a primary beam along a first axis into the volume; allowing at least one of the receivers to receive a secondary beam of radiation along a second axis from the volume; the secondary beam being generated by reflection of a primary beam from a target intruding into the volume; the secondary beam being generated in the volume by way of but not constituted by, the or any primary beam from an emitter; and enabling one or more of the receivers to provide an output signal into the network of the compound receiver characteristic of the, or each, secondary beam detected by at least one of the receivers in the second group; and providing that where the compound sensor serves to establish: that when an excess gain ratio is relatively small in an output signal from a single receiver caused by reception by the receiver of a secondary beam and the size of the gap is relatively large then the compound sensor functions so as to increase sensitivity of detection existing within a given predetermined region of the volume by comparison with sensitivity in another region or regions in the volume; that when an excess gain ratio is relatively large in an output signal from a single receiver caused by reception by the receiver of a secondary beam and the size of the gap is reducing or small then the sensor functions so as to increase sensitivity of detection within more than one region of the volume by comparison with sensitivity in another region or regions in the volume.

    摘要: An air displacing device for transferring air from a first location to a second location comprising a housing including a fan, a prime mover for the fan, means defining an air inlet to receive air from the first location, and an air outlet to deliver air to the second location and a duct for air through the housing from the inlet to the outlet, the fan being operable by way of the prime mover to cause air to be displaced along the duct from the inlet to the outlet, the housing serving to define a datum plane characterized in that the housing has external members adapted for displacement between a first, standby, configuration where the projection of the housing from the datum plane is a minimum and so the volume of the housing is a minimum and a second, working, configuration where the projection of the housing from the datum plane is a maximum and so the volume of the housing is a maximum. The invention is particularly applicable for hand driers but is also applicable to other air moving devices such as vacuum cleaners, air conditioning units and drying apparatus for objects other than hands.

Also provided are isolated polynucleotide molecules and vectors incorporating a chimeric RSV genome or antigenome which includes a partial or complete human or bovine RSV “background” genome or antigenome combined or integrated with one or more heterologous gene(s) or genome segment(s) of a different RSV strain. Chimeric human-bovine RSV of the invention include a partial or complete “background” RSV genome or antigenome derived from or patterned after a human or bovine RSV strain or subgroup virus combined with one or more heterologous gene(s) or genome segment(s) of a different RSV strain or subgroup virus to form the human-bovine chimeric RSV genome or antigenome. In preferred aspects of the invention, chimeric RSV incorporate a partial or complete bovine RSV background genome or antigenome combined with one or more heterologous gene(s) or genome segment(s) from a human RSV. Genes of interest include any of the NS1, NS2, N, P, M, SH, M2(ORF1), M2(ORF2), L, F or G genes or a genome segment including a protein or portion thereof. A variety of additional mutations and nucleotide modifications are provided within the human-bovine chimeric RSV of the invention to yield desired phenotypic and structural effects.

    摘要: A diagnostic assay for detecting a negative-strand RNA virus in a sample and a genetically engineered cell for use in the assay are disclosed. The cell expresses a heterologous DNA-dependent RNA polymerase that synthesizes a minigenome or miniantigenome of the RNA virus from a cDNA template present in the cell. The cell also expresses the nucleocapsid proteins of the negative-strand virus that are necessary for replication of the minigenome or miniantigenome. Infection of the cell by the negative-strand virus results in expression of a reporter gene product encoded by the miniantigenome.
