The present invention includes a composition of matter comprising a sulfide of a metal selected from Groups VIB, VIIB and VIII of the Periodic Tables, or mixtures thereof, and an aromatic, nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound selected from the group consisting of tetrahydroquinoline, and the mono and diorgano substituted derivatives of tetrahydroquinoline. These compositions are useful as catalyst precursors. Indeed, upon heating at temperatures above 200.degree. C., the compounds are converted to active catalysts useful in polymerizing nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compounds.

Novel polymers consisting essentially of frecurring moieties selected from polyquinoxaline and substituted polyquinoxalines are disclosed. These polymers are prepared by contacting 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroquinoxaline or 1,2,3,4-organo substituted tetrahydroquinoxaline compounds with a transition metal sulfide catalyst at elevated temperatures. Also disclosed are quaternary ammonium derivatives of the novel polymers, their preparation and use.

The present invention is directed toward the preparation of novel polysubstituted fullerenes. The method of forming polysubstituted fullerenes comprises contacting a fullerene with an electrophilic reagent selected from the group consisting of nitronium ion and organic peracid, provided that when the electrophilic reagent is nitronium ion, the fullerene is subsequently contacted with a nucleophilic reagent.

The present invention is predicated on the discovery that quinoline and substituted quinoline derivatives, having substituents in positions other than the 2 and 6 position, undergo polymerization in the presence of tetrahydroquinoline or substituted tetrahydroquinolines and a transition metal sulfide catalyst to produce polymers that have repeating quinoline and substituted moieties.Thus, in one embodiment of the present invention, there is provided a novel method of preparing polymers having the formula ##STR1## which comprises contacting a tetrahydroquinoline having the formula ##STR2## with a quinoline compound having the formula ##STR3## at elevated temperatures and in the presence of a transition metal sulfide catalyst wherein the metal is selected from Groups VIB, VIIB of the periodic table and mixtures thereof and wherein the Rs (i.e. R.sub.3, R.sub.4, etc.) and the R's (i.e. R'.sub.3, R'.sub.4, etc.) may be the same or different and are selected from hydrogen, halogen (especially fluoro-, chloro- and bromo-), --NO.sub.2, OH, --NH.sub.2, --SH, --CN and organic substituents. In the above polymer, x and y represent the relative proportion of bracketed structural quinoline or substituted moieties, and n is an integer equal to or greater than 2.

One embodiment of the present invention is directed to polysubstituted fullerene moieties having a plurality of substituents thereon, selected from the group consisting of hydroxy, oxide, nitro, amino, organocarboxy, amide, and mixtures thereof.Another embodiment is directed toward the preparation of the novel polysubstituted fullerenes. The method of forming polysubstituted fullerenes comprises contacting fullerenes with an electrophilic reagent such as nitronium ion or an organic peracid. When the electrophilic agent is nitronium ion, the fullerene is further contacted with a nucleophilic reagent. Polysubstituted fullerenes comprise a fullerene moiety selected from fullerenes or mixtures thereof having a plurality of substituents thereon.The polysubstituted fullerenes are particularly useful as cross-linking agents in polymers and/or as core building blocks of star polymers.
