    Abstract: An optical receiver may include a planar lightwave circuit with an optical path and a tapered reflection surface to direct an optical beam toward a top surface of the planar lightwave circuit. The optical receiver may include a photodiode disposed onto the top surface of the planar lightwave circuit such that a receive portion of the photodiode is aligned to the optical path, wherein a gap between the photodiode and the planar lightwave circuit is less than 5 microns.

    Abstract: An optical device includes a waveguide device and a fiber stub. The fiber stub at least partially contains a first optical fiber and is directly attached to the waveguide device by an adhesive. The first optical fiber is to be coupled to a second optical fiber included in an optical connector when the optical connector is inserted into a receptacle of the optical device. The fiber stub is to couple the first optical fiber to at least one of the waveguide device or an optical waveguide included in the waveguide device.

    Abstract: An integrated and compact multifunctional optical isolator (i.e., a combined splitter, isolator, and spot-size converter), which is suitable for use in a TOSA, includes input optics including a first polarizer, a Faraday rotator, and a second polarizer. The input optics include a wedge having a partially reflective coating disposed on a first face thereof. The input beam is incident on the first face at a non-normal angle of incidence such light passing through the wedge is refracted to a second face of the wedge, which is tilted relative to the first face by a predetermined wedge angle. At least one of the non-normal angle of incidence and the predetermined wedge angle is determined dependence upon a refractive index of the wedge material and a target anamorphic magnification of the input beam of light.
