Abstract: An annular axial flux motor includes a rotor mounted on an annular subsection of a rotatable cam ring and a stator mounted on an annular subsection of a carrier frame. The rotor includes two Halbach arrays of permanent magnets spaced from each other on the cam ring along an axial direction. The stator includes multiple phase electrical windings printed on multiple layers of a printed circuit board (PCB) that are stacked along the axial direction. The multiple layers are positioned between the Halbach arrays, with active side of the Halbach arrays facing to opposite sides of the multiple layers. The Halbach arrays are configured to generate a symmetrical magnetic field and the multiple phase electrical windings are configured to have a same rotor-dependent torque constant, such that the stator can generate a constant torque to rotate the rotor and the cam ring within a finite travel range.

Abstract: A thermal monitoring and dissipation system for use with an optical device is described. The optical device includes the following: a frame defining a pair of eye openings and including a pair of arms configured to extend over the ears of a user of the optical device; a temperature monitoring system configured to monitor a distribution of heat within the frame; a display assembly configured to display content to a user of the optical device; and a processor configured to receive temperature data from the temperature monitoring system and to adjust an output of the display assembly based on variation in the distribution of heat within the frame.

Abstract: An example head-mounted display device includes a light projector, an optical assembly arranged to direct light from a light projector to a user, and an actuator module. The optical assembly includes a variable focus lens assembly including a rigid refractive component, a shaper ring defining an aperture, and a flexible lens membrane between the shaper ring and the rigid refractive component and covering the aperture. The refractive component, the shaper ring, and the lens membrane are arranged along an axis. The refractive component and the lens membrane define a chamber containing a volume of fluid. The actuator module is configured to adjust an optical power of the variable focus lens by moving the shaper ring relative to the refractive component along the axis, such that a curvature of the lens membrane in the aperture is modified.
