摘要: Radiation therapy devices, systems and methods are in general sheet-like form, are characterized by flexibility, and include at least one spacer that can be a balloon or bubble that assists in placement of radio therapeutic members at desired treatment locations along or around a limb, within an existing body cavity, or at a site that was formed under a patient's skin for treatment purposes. Sarcoma treatment is particularly conducive to treatment by these devices, systems and methods. One or more detectors, such as microdiodes, are accommodated when desired on the device, and a hyperthermia tube or the like is also includable that delivers hyperthermia treatment for the target treatment site or sites. Data collected by the detector allows the medical professional to monitor radiation treatment and, when desired, interaction between hyperthermia treatment and radiation delivery by the radiation treatment member.

摘要: Radiation diagnosis devices, systems and methods are in general catheter form and include at least one diagnostic balloon that provides at least one diagnosis function and assists in placement of at least one radiation detector at a desired diagnosis location within an existing body cavity or at a percutaneous site. Data collected by the detector that is positioned as determined by the medical professional allows the medical professional to monitor radiation levels, either residual from a prior radiation treatment, during a brachytherapy treatment at the diagnostic catheter insertion site or in adjoining site, or during externally administered radiation.

摘要: Brachytherapy oncology treatment systems and methods are provided. One such system and method employs a catheter or tandem and a mobile balloon device having an enclosed inner volume and an internal surface with an internal perimeter size larger than the external surface perimeter size and adequate to allow sliding longitudinal movement between the catheter or tandem and the mobile balloon device. The mobile balloon device has a radiation dose delivery tube that is at or moves by inflation to a strategic radiation dose delivery location for brachytherapy. An embodiment allows for a multi-part catheter or tandem having a detachable distal section suitable for retaining within a body cavity such as the uterus, both during radiation treatment and during recovery time between radiation treatments. This distal portion can be intended for single-patient use and be disposed of after completion of a radiation treatment session having multiple radiation dose treatment times. One or both of real time in vivo detection and monitoring and hypertherapy features can be included.

摘要: Intracavitary brachytherapy tandem and ovoid oncology treatment systems and methods are provided. One such system and method employs a multi-part tandem having a detachable distal section suitable for retaining within a body cavity such as the uterus, both during radiation treatment and during recovery time between radiation treatments. This distal portion can be intended for single-patient use and be disposed of after completion of a radiation treatment session having multiple radiation dose treatment times. One or both of real time in vivo detection and monitoring and hypertherapy features can be included. One or more of the system tandem or ovoid colpostats feature bendability to tailor the system to the specific body and patient being treated. The method includes having a tandem distal section inserted into a body cavity such as a uterus and remaining within the body cavity in between treatment times. Other systems and methods incorporate balloon devices that assist in spacing radiation doses away from body sites at which radiation treatment is not intended. Balloon devices also can be provided for adjusting and maintaining separation spacing between two ovoid colpostats while intracavitary.

摘要: The present invention provides a significantly improved therapeutic tool for radiation therapy in or near body cavities accessible through existing orifices. At least one therapeutic balloon of a catheter and balloon assembly is inflated by fluid communication through the catheter. Several embodiments provide radiation therapy, at times in association with one or more of formation of seals, control of movement, nutrient passage and drainage. The radiation therapy is provided by means of rods or other radiotherapeutic items secured, positioned or inserted along the contour of the surface of the therapeutic balloon and which are thus deployed to treatment position by balloon inflation. Control of movement can be achieved through the use of a small balloon usually located where the body cavity changes size, such as at the body orifice; through the use of a template, which may be sutured to nearby tissue or secured with tether catheter assemblies inserted in other body cavities; through the use of a catheter lead which is inserted into narrow portions of a body cavity; or through the use of a secondary balloon located distally of the larger therapeutic balloon. Drainage, often required when performing this procedure in the bladder or rectum, is achieved by the use of a Foley-type catheter. Feeding, inhalation and exhalation are permitted through a communication channel within the catheter.

摘要: The present invention provides a significantly improved diagnostic tool and procedure for radiation therapy in or near body cavities accessible through existing orifices. This invention makes use of a flexible catheter and balloon. The balloon is inflated by fluid communication through the catheter. This invention makes use of several preferable embodiments which provide radiopaque references, seals, control of movement, and drainage. The radiopaque references are provided by means of radiopaque lines painted on the balloon's interior or exterior surface, by means of the use of radiopaque fluid to inflate the balloon, or by means of a slidable clip made of radiopaque material which is positioned at the patient's orifice. Sealing is provided by means of the slidable clip which also permits adjustment of the balloon size and shape. Control of movement is achieved through the use of a small balloon usually located near the patient's orifice. Drainage, often required when performing this procedure in the bladder, is achieved by the use of a Foley-type catheter.
