The present invention relates to formulations of a pharmacological effective fat-soluble active ingredient with a high bioavailability of said fat-soluble active ingredient as well as to their manufacture and use as dietary supplement, food, feed, personal care product and/or pharmaceutical. Such formulations are those which when dissolved, dispersed or diluted in/with water have an extinction E 1/1 at a wavelength in the range of from 200 to 800 nm, preferably in the range of from 250 to 600 nm, more preferably in the range of from 250 to 500 nm, more preferably in the range of from 370 to 485 nm, of ≧380, preferably of ≧600, most preferably ≧900. In preferred embodiments of the formulations of the present invention such formulations show an extrusion loss of fat-soluble active ingredient of ≦30% when pressed to tablets.

The present invention relates to a process for the manufacture of a modified lupin protein, which comprises adjusting an aqueous solution or suspension of lupin proteins of native origin having a dry mass content of from 0.1 to 20% to pH 3 to 9, adding 0.01 to 10% by weight of a protease, in relation to the dry weight of the lupin protein, incubating the protein solution or suspension at a temperature of from 5 to 70° C. until a degree of hydrolysis of from I to 30% is obtained, and inactivating the protease, to modified lupin proteins obtainable by this process, to compositions containing said lupin proteins together with a fat-soluble active ingredient or colorant, and to the use of said composition for enrichment, fortification and/or coloration of food, beverages, animal feeds, cosmetics or drugs. The use of α-zeacarotene, β-zeacarotene or a mixture of both as a coloring agent for food or pharmaceutical compositions. For addition to the food or pharmaceutical composition or otherwise incorporation therein during its preparation the zeacarotene (mixture) is generally first formulated to a solid or liquid colorant composition in the form of a stable water-soluble or -dispersible powder, an aqueous colloidal solution or oil-in-water dispersion of such powder, an oil-in-water dispersion of the zeacarotene (mixture), or an oil-soluble dispersion of the zeacarotene (mixture) in a triglyceride. In a solid colorant composition the zeacarotene (mixture) is generally finely dispersed in a matrix or carrier. Such colorant compositions may be prepared by homogenizing, in an aqueous or colloidal solution of a carrier and optionally one or more water-soluble excipients and/or adjuvants, a solution or dispersion of the zeacarotene (mixture) and optionally one or more fat-soluble excipients and/or adjuvants in a triglyceride or an organic solvent, or in a mixture of both triglyceride and organic solvent, and, if required, converting the so obtained dispersion into a solid composition. The colorant compositions, their processes of preparation and the food or pharmaceutical compositions which comprise the zeacarotene (mixture) as the coloring agent are further aspects of this invention.
