The inner ring and the outer rings have flexible annular lips that contact the surface of the rotary shaft. The support ring supports the inner lip and determines the position of the inner lip. The first lip permits fluid leakage along the surface of the shaft, while the second lip forms a fluid-tight seal with the shaft. The support ring prevents the internal pressure of the compressor from pressing the first lip against the shaft with excessive force, which extends the life of the sealing apparatus.

An improved displacement control valve incorporated in a variable displacement compressor. The control valve includes a valve body and a solenoid for actuating the valve body. The coil of the solenoid is wound about a bobbin made of insulating synthetic resin. A base plate integrally protrudes from the bobbin. A pair of conducting plates are secured to the base plate. Each plate has a clamping block. The coil has a pair of terminal wires. Each terminal wire is secured to and electrically corrected to one of the clamping blocks. Each terminal wire is wound about a holder formed in each plate between the bobbin and the corresponding clamping block. A diode is secured to the holders and is connected in parallel with the coil. A pair of terminals of the diode are secured to the corresponding holders by soldering and crimping. The holders prevent tension in the terminal wires from being applied to electrical joints formed between the wires and the clamping blocks, which makes the valve more reliable.

The separated lubricating oil is stored in the crank chamber to lubricate all movable elements in the crank chamber.

The piston compresses gas supplied to the cylinder bore from a separate external circuit by way of a suction chamber and discharges the compressed gas to the external circuit by way of a discharge chamber. The cam plate is tiltable between a maximum inclined angle position and a minimum inclined angle position with respect to a plane perpendicular to an axis of the drive shaft according to a difference between the pressure in the crank chamber and the pressure in the cylinder bore. The piston moves by the stroke based on an inclination of the cam plate to control the displacement of the compressor. A valve is placed between the discharge chamber and the external circuit. The valve selectively connects and disconnects the discharge chamber with the external circuit based on a difference between the pressure acting on the upstream side of the valve and the pressure acting on the downstream side of the valve.

A front uppermost and a rear uppermost layer of the swash plate are formed of a sprayed coating of, for example, a copper-base material and the rear uppermost layer is coated by a solid lubricant layer containing a solid lubricant, such as molybdenum disulfide, at least in a part of the solid lubricant. The thickness of the solid lubricant layer is measured and controlled by using the surface of the front layer as a reference plane.

The collector passage is communicated with a central region of the heat-generating chamber, and is capable of opening and closing. The supply passage is communicated with a lower region of the heat-generating chamber. The control chamber is communicated with the collector passage and the supply passage. A silicone oil, held in the heat-generating chamber, is collected into the control chamber by the Weissenberg effect by way of the opened collector passage, thereby carrying out the capacity reduction. Whilst, the silicone oil, held in the control chamber, is supplied into the heat-generating chamber by way of the supply passage, thereby carrying out the capacity enlargement.

A fluid pressure operating system includes an oil pump 12 rotated by an engine 21 and an actuator 20 operated by the operating fluid issued from the oil pump 12. A heat exchanger 39 is arranged between an outlet of the oil pump 12 and the actuator 20. Heat generated at the oil pump 12 in the fluid pressure operating system 11 is passed to the engine cooling water at the heat emitter and is used for heating the cabin.
