Abstract: A method of sizing, resizing or reshaping the interior of a prosthetic device is disclosed. The method includes placing a lightweight moldable or shape assuming, pliable material that adheres and hardens on the interior sides of a socket of a prosthetic device. An end of a residual limb is placed into the socket causing the moldable material to conform to the shape of the residual limb. The limb is maintained in position for a few minutes in the socket until the moldable material has sufficiently hardened. After hardening, the molded material is dressed down, sanded or feathered to remove any burrs or sharp edges. Low spots or holes may be filled in with more moldable material and the fitting process repeated.

Abstract: Methods of obtaining a sample of target nucleic acid from cells containing the target nucleic acid and genomic DNA or RNA are disclosed. In contrast to prior art protocols, this method does not require the cells containing the target nucleic acid to be lysed and instead is based on the observation when cells are suspended in an aqueous medium and the target nucleic acid are released into the medium through the cell walls. The invention therefore helps to avoid the use of cell lysis, heating, extremes of pH, water immiscible solvents, and electrical fields used in prior art nucleic acid extraction methods. The present invention is particularly applicable to the separation of non-genomic nucleic acid, such as cellular vector DNA or RNA, self-replicating satellite nucleic acids or plasmid DNA, from genomic nucleic acids, such as host cell chromosomes and ribosomal RNA.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for detecting a collision between signal transmissions on a carrier medium, such as UTP wiring, are described. The method commences with the transmission of an identifier from a transmitter of a network device. The transmitted identifier has a predetermined duration and includes a pulse at a temporal location within the transmitted identifier specific thereto. A identifier is also received at a receiver of the network device. The received identifier also has a predetermined duration, and includes a pulse at a temporal location therein. A determination is then made as to whether the temporal location of the pulse within the received identifier corresponds to the temporal location of the pulse within the transmitted identifier. If not, a collision is detected on the network.

Abstract: A receiver for a LAN which uses a transformer for isolation. Base line wander is prevented by use of a positive feedback path which provides a signal that compensates for low frequency loss through the transformer. The feedback path connects the output of the receiver to the secondary winding of the transformer. The time constant of the transformer and terminating resistor L/R equals the RC time constant in the feedback path.
