摘要: An axle assembly for a motor vehicle comprises an axle housing having a central axis and first and second openings formed through the axle housing opposite to each other, a carrier with a differential bearing support supporting a differential thereon for rotation about the central axis, and an abutment member attached to the axle housing adjacent to the first opening to extend substantially in a direction of the central axis. The carrier is fastened to the axle housing adjacent to the second opening therein. The abutment member engages the differential bearing support and absorbs a gear separating force imparted in operation by the differential and transmitted to the differential bearing support. Thus, the abutment member restrains deflection of the differential bearing support relative to the axle housing resulting from the gear separating force.

摘要: A drive system designed to use a vehicle's existing hydraulic system to operate a controllable limited slip differential assembly. The limited slip differential assembly may be associated with the front axle, the rear axle, or the driveline between the front and rear axles. The differential assembly may also be used in combination that includes front, rear, or intermediate differential assemblies. The drive system further includes a friction clutch assembly for selectively engaging and disengaging an input member with an output member of the differential assembly, a fluid clutch actuator for selectively frictionally and variably loading the clutch assembly, and a fluid pump that is a common source of pressurized fluid for the fluid clutch actuator and the existing hydraulic system of the motor vehicle other than the fluid clutch actuator of the drive system. The fluid clutch actuator is actuated by fluid pressure generated by the fluid pump.

摘要: An adjustable pinion offset in a differential axle assembly. The offset between a pinion gear and shaft relative to a ring gear in the differential axle assembly is adjustable due to an eccentric mounting of the pinion assembly relative to the differential housing containing the ring gear. The pinion shaft is eccentrically mounted within a bore of the differential housing such that a simple rotation of the pinion assembly about the eccentric pilot mounting adjusts the position of the pinion shaft with respect to the ring gear to adjust pinion offset. Once properly positioned, the pinion assembly is secured to the differential housing to maintain the desired position. This invention substantially reduces the noise associated with gear offset error.
