摘要: Fine particles (23) are oriented and dispersed in a polymer medium to obtain a composite material (24), which is high-density compression molded to such a size that a photonic band gap develops, thereby obtaining a photonic crystal element (26). The orientation of the fine particles (23) in the polymer medium can be carried out on a scale (tens of micrometers to several millimeters) where required manipulations can be done with ease.

摘要: There is provided an optical fiber device including two optical fibers, rod lenses, and an optical functional element. The two rod lenses have the same refractive index distribution and the front face of each is respectively formed, at the approximate midpoint of a position where the mode field diameter of the propagating light emitted from the optical fiber and propagating through the interior of the rod lens forms a local maximum, and a position where the mode field diameter, in case the same rod lens is assumed to be extended in the axial direction, forms a local minimum subsequent to the aforementioned local maximum, in the propagation direction of the same propagating light, perpendicularly to the axis. Also, both front faces of the two rod lenses are arranged symmetrically with respect to a point where a beam waist is formed.

摘要: There is provided an optical connector module of which an optical transmission/reception wafer and an optical waveguide wafer can be registered with each other easily and accurately without misregistration. An optical transmission/reception wafer has guide pin-receiving V-grooves with a V-shaped cross-section, formed at locations preset in association with an optical transmission/reception end of an optical transmission/reception section. An optical waveguide-side connector has an optical waveguide wafer formed with guide pin-receiving V-grooves in association with the guide pin-receiving V-grooves of the optical transmission/reception wafer. Wafer registration guide pins are inserted in these guide pin-receiving V-grooves, and the optical transmission/reception wafer and the optical waveguide wafer are brought close for interconnection such that these guide pins are tightly sandwiched by the guide pin-receiving grooves.

摘要: Spherical particles having curvatures larger than those of irregularities, crystal grain boundaries, lattice defects or the like (referred to collectively as irregularities, hereinafter) on the surface of a conductive metal material are ejected at high speeds to make the particles collide against the surface of the conductive metal material, thereby repeatedly causing rapid melting and cooling at the minute points of impact of the particles, thereby changing the surface into amorphous. Then, spherical particles having curvatures smaller than those of irregularities on the surface subjected to the treatment described above collide against the surface, thereby changing the surface into amorphous and planarizing the surface.

摘要: In a fiber optic gyroscope in which light from a light source is split into two beams for supply to one and the other end of an optical fiber coil respectively, and the two beams having propagated through the optical fiber coil and emitted the one and the other end thereof are coupled together for supply to a photodetector, there are separately formed on an optical integrated circuit substrate two optical waveguide couplers, each comprising a trunk and a pair of branches extending therefrom. The pair of branches of a first one of the two optical waveguide couplers are connected to the light source and the photodetector, respectively, and the pair of branches of the second optical waveguide coupler are connected to the one and the other end of the optical fiber coil, respectively. The trunks of the first and second optical waveguide couplers are interconnected via a connecting optical fiber. The optical integrated circuit substrate is fixed to a reinforcing plate of a material which has a thermal expansion coefficient nearly equal to that of the optical integrated circuit substrate. The reinforcing plate is held on a support structure by flexible holding means.

摘要: In a waveguide type optical device which has an optical waveguide and modulation electrodes for varying its refractive index, both formed in the top of a substrate and a ferroelectric crystal having a pyroelectric effect, the top of the crystal substrate being parallel to the direction of its spontaneous polarization, conductive films are formed in two surfaces of the crystal substrate which cross the direction of the spontaneous polarization. The conductive films are electrically interconnected to thereby prevent a change in the operating temperature characteristic of the optical device which is caused by the pyroelectric effect of the crystal substrate.
