Abstract:
The invention provides compositions and methods for treatment of epilepsy in an animal. In one embodiment, a method for treating epilepsy in a companion animal can comprise administering to the companion animal a food composition comprising a medium chain triglyceride (MCT), wherein the MCT is present in the food composition in an effective amount for reducing or preventing seizures when the food composition is administered to the companion animal.
Abstract:
Compositions and methods for influencing the recovery of an animal from the effects of strenuous physical activity. The compositions generally comprise about 4% to 6% readily absorbable carbohydrate; about 10% to 30% maltodextrins; about 20% to 50% starch, for a total of about 40% to 80% carbohydrate; about 20% to about 40% protein; and optionally one or more antioxidants. The methods generally comprise administering the composition to an animal within the period from about 120 minutes before initiation of or 120 minutes after completion of the physical activity.
Abstract:
The invention provides methods for diagnosing cognitive impairment in a canine. The methods comprise measuring a first body temperature of the canine from about 0.5 to about 3 hours after waking; measuring a second body temperature of the canine from about 8 to about 13 hours after measuring the first body temperature; and determining that the canine is cognitively impaired if the first body temperature is less than 0.6° C. lower than the second body temperature.
Abstract:
The invention provides compositions and methods for treatment of epilepsy in an animal. In one embodiment, a dietary regime suitable for enhancing the effect of an anti-epileptic drug (AED) in an animal can comprise a food composition comprising a medium chain triglyceride (MCT) and the AED, wherein the MCT is present in the food composition in an effective amount for enhancing the effect of the AED when the food composition and the AED are administered to the animal.

Abstract:
The invention provides methods and devices for evaluating and tracking canine physical activity by determining for a canine (1) the duration of an activity or exercise; the speed of the activity or exercise based on the type of activity or exercise pace, e.g., walking, trotting, cantering, or running; a breed category factor to accommodate speed differences in distance travelled because of differences in body size and stride length; and an age factor and (2) calculating physical activity points (PAP) for the canine using an equation designed to accept input for the variables in (1) and use those variables to calculate PAP. The results from the equation are used to evaluate the physical activity of the canine and, based upon the evaluation, alter, if required, the canine's physical activity in a way that benefits the canine, particularly the canine's health.
