Abstract: Achieving phase synchronization in single frequency networks may be useful in various communication systems. For example, the use of synchronous Ethernet, timing over packet, and radio interface based synchronization (RIBS) may be applied in mobile and/or data communication networks. Certain embodiments improve phase accuracy using a hybrid synchronization method beyond standard RIBS and clustering carriers using the same transmission waveforms across carriers. Certain embodiments also select a master transmission point to maximize the signal quality of the composite waveforms in a cluster.

Abstract: Various communication systems may benefit from an improved signaling protocol. For example, communication systems may benefit from an improved network support for a single frequency network transmission using an Ethernet switch. A method includes receiving a message at an access point in a single frequency network from a network entity through a data switch. The message comprises an indication of at least one of a downlink physical channel or an uplink physical channel. The method also includes transmitting a request for a signal characteristic through the at least one downlink physical channel to a user equipment. In addition, the method includes receiving the signal characteristic through the at least one uplink physical channel from the user equipment. Further, the method includes transmitting a response message through the data switch from the access point to the network entity indicating the signal characteristic.

Abstract: An apparatus and method for antenna selection in uplink coordinated multipoint communications, where a plural number of geographically separated antennas are present, forming a plural number of cells. This apparatus and method relates to selecting a PRACH configuration, sharing information regarding the selected PRACH preamble amongst cells; an user equipment, upon receiving instruction from its serving cell, transmits a PRACH preamble. All cells, including serving cell, detects the selected PRACH preamble in the received PRACH transmission transmitted by the user equipment, determining pathloss information regarding the quality of the detected selected PRACH preamble, and selecting a set of cooperative multipoint antennas from the plural number of antennas based on the determined channel quality information for this user equipment. This apparatus and method is also applicable for antenna selection in the case of a single cell with a plural number of geographically separated antennas.
