Abstract: This specification discloses devices and methods that provide for an improved switched mode power supply (SMPS) with a supply voltage connected p-type active clamp. In some embodiments, such an improved SMPS can have a p-type active clamp connected on one side to a positive voltage (which can preferably be the supply voltage), and on the other side to a clamp capacitor. Such an improved SMPS would then have the benefit of not requiring additional components (such as a level shifter, a high side supply voltage, a negative supply voltage, etc.) and the costs associated with these additional components.

Abstract: A switch mode power supply can include a bipolar device (e.g., bipolar junction transistor) connected in series with a capacitor and operable as a bipolar clamp switch where the bipolar device can be turned on by forward biasing a collector-base junction. The capacitor connected in association with the bipolar device can keep the bipolar clamp switch conductive for a limited time based on energy obtained from a transformer primary winding and stored in the capacitor when the base-collector junction bias is reversed. Storage charge properties of the bipolar clamp switch can be used to keep it conductive and working as an active clamp without requiring a high driver circuit.

Abstract: Switched mode power supply (SMPS) with adaptive reference voltage for controlling an output transistor and method of operating the SMPS are described. The adaptive reference voltage is implemented using a timer that starts when the voltage on a conduction terminal of the output transistor reaches a reference voltage and stops when the current through the output transistor reaches zero. The voltage difference between a target voltage and a voltage accumulated when the timer was active is then sampled to produce a sampled voltage, which defines a new reference voltage if the accumulated voltage is not equal to the target voltage so that the reference voltage is adaptively adjusted in accordance with an operational characteristic of the output transistor.
