Improved thermoplastic compositions that are resistant to die beard growth are described herein, comprising poly(phenylene ether) resins, polyamide resins and an amount of a beard growth reducing agent selected from the group consisting of non-elastomeric polyolefin resins, partially fluorinated polyolefins, and mixtures of non-elastomeric polyolefin resins and partially fluorinated polyolefins, effective for inhibiting beard growth. The compositions may further comprise at least one impact modifier, flow promotor or filler.

Polymer blend compositions comprise (a) a polyphenylene ether polymer, (b) a polyphthalamide comprising the reaction product of (i) hexamethylene diamine or a mixture of hexamethylene diamine and trimethylhexamethylene diamine, and (ii) terephthalic acid, and optionally (iii) at least one acid selected from the group consisting of isophthalic acid and adipic acid, provided that a mixture of said diamines is employed if reactant (iii) is absent, and (c) at least one compatibilizer. The compositions may further include an aliphatic polyamide and/or an impact modifier.

A novel process is disclosed for preparing a composition which comprises a polyphenylene ether resin and an alkenyl aromatic resin. The process is based on preparing a preblend of the polyphenylene ether resin with a compound that reduces the alloying temperature of the polyphenylene ether resin, and thereafter combining the preblend with the alkenyl aromatic resin.
