    摘要: A dry-air-surface heat exchanger is provided for use in a liquid cooling tower, and includes a plurality of preformed, shape-retaining heat transfer members of relatively thin synthetic resin sheet material. Each member presents a pair of upright, side-by-side panels that are preferably folded together about a vertical axis to present inward-facing wet-transfer surfaces adapted to transfer heat between the fluid and the member, and an outward-facing dry-transfer surface adapted to transfer heat between the member and air. The folded member is configured to present a series of tortuous liquid flow paths between the panels extending between the upper and lower edges, and the side edges are secured together in substantially fluid tight sealing engagement. A plurality of the folded members are provided in a pack, and a diffuser is positioned adjacent to the upper edges of the folded members for receiving hot liquid and directing the hot liquid between the panels of each member. The diffuser seats against the upper edges to substantially uniformly distribute the fluid to be cooled into the fluid passages while keeping the air passages therebetween free of fluid. The ratio of the total vertical, cross-sectional area of the liquid passages through the heat transfer members with respect to the total vertical, cross-sectional area of the air passages between the heat transfer members is from about 0.67 to about 1.5.

    摘要: An improved splash-type fill bar (32) for water cooling towers (10) is provided which gives enhanced water cooling as compared with conventional bars. The bars (32) are of trapezoidal configuration and present a flat, apertured top wall (36), a pair of obliquely oriented, downwardly and outwardly extending apertured sidewalls (42, 44) and short, horizontal, imperforate flange walls (50, 52) extending from the lower margins (46, 48) of the sidewalls (42, 44). The width of top wall (36) is at least four times the vertical height of a sidewall (42, 44) so as to present an effective water dispersal surface; the oblique sidewalls (42, 44) and flange walls (50, 52) prevent formation of gravitating sheets or films of water which can inhibit tower performance.

    摘要: A crossflow cooling tower includes at least two separate packs of film fill which are both horizontally and vertically offset relative to each other. Each of the film packs has a height within a certain critical range of values, and presents a plurality of air passageways of lengths within a certain critical range. In addition, each pack is inclined from vertical to a degree within a certain range of values. Construction of a multilevel tower with film fill packs in accordance with the invention provides far greater cooling effectiveness than could be attained by, for instance, a single film fill pack or fill structure comprising a plurality of splash bars. A water distribution system directs separate streams of hot water to be cooled to a corresponding distribution basin laying atop each fill pack and nozzles within the floor of each basin are subjected to substantially equal heads so that the flow rates of the water dispersed to each pack are essentially equal.

    摘要: An improved, three path, cellular drift eliminator is provided which effectively removes entrained water particles from high velocity moist air streams leaving a crossflow cooling tower fill structure by the use of spaced, cellular, diversion path-defining structures strategically located and arranged to facilitate maximum drift elimination. The eliminator preferably includes a plurality of discrete cells, each cell comprising three air diversion sections along the length thereof in order to divert fill derived air along a serpentine path for drift elimination purposes. The moist air is first diverted at an upward angle and laterally relative to the initial path thereof by the inlet diversion section, and thereafter is rediverted upwardly and laterally of the first diversion path by the intermediate diversion section. The air is finally rediverted in the direction of its initial path, and discharged upwardly at an angle of at least about 20 degrees and not greater than about 60 degrees to the horizontal by the outlet diversion section. Downward draining perforations between the inlet and intermediate diversion sections allow for rapid discharge of accumulated liquid within the eliminator.
