Even if a rotational speed of an engine has already increased due to slipping of a fluid torque converter at the time of start of downshifting, a smooth downshifting is performed. For that purpose, there is obtained a speed change developing degree function K(etrm) of the rotational speed of the engine at the time of start of downshifting, the developing degree being dependent on an increase in the rotational speed of the engine due to slipping in the fluid torque converter. The function K(etrm) is obtained with a speed ratio "etrm" of the fluid torque converter at the time of starting of downshifting as a parameter. A boosting correction value QDNOFFZ is computed by multiplying a reference correction value QDNOFFZO by K(etrm) (step S108-5). The hydraulic pressure of the hydraulic engaging element on the disengaging side during downshifting is boosted by the amount of QDNOFFZ (step S108-6).

A system for estimating a temperature of a vehicle hydraulically-operated transmission including a hydraulic torque converter, a plurality of frictional engaging elements such as clutches installed in the transmission and a hydraulic pressure supplying circuit for discharging hydraulic fluid from one of said plurality of frictional engaging elements and for supplying hydraulic fluid to another to bring said one and another one of said plurality of frictional engaging elements into operation such that gear-shift is effected in the transmission. A heat quantity generated by the hydraulic coupling means (.DELTA.Ttr), a heat quantity generated by at least one of the frictional engaging elements at gearshift (.DELTA.Tcl(No)), a heat quantity generated by stirring of the hydraulic fluid (.notident.Tst), a heat quantity generated or absorbed at a heat exchanger which exchanges heat from the fluid (.DELTA.Tra), and some similar values are calculated and summed to estimate a temperature of the clutches, thereby enabling a fine hydraulic pressure control.

A valve operation control system for an internal combustion engine having an engine valve supported in an engine body for opening and closing. A phase control means is interposed between a crankshaft and the valve operating cam shaft to control the rotating phase of the crankshaft relative to the valve operating cam shaft. A valve drive means is interposed between the valve operating cam and the engine valve to transmit the valve opening force by the valve operating cam to the engine valve. The valve drive means includes a resilient valve opening means for generating resilient force in the valve opening direction and a holding means for holding the engine valve in a closed position while springs accumulate the valve opening force. The holding means is selectively operable to switch between a valve holding state and a valve releasing state to control the valve opening timing of the engine valve in response to operating conditions of said engine.

A valve operation control system in an internal combustion engine, comprising an engine valve openably and closably supported on an engine body, a valve spring for biasing the engine valve in a valve closing direction, and valve driving means interposed between a valve-operating cam and the engine valve to transmit a force in the valve-opening direction provided by the valve-operating cam to the engine valve. The valve driving means includes a valve-opening resilient member for exhibiting a repulsive force in a direction to open the engine valve, and closed-position retaining means is interposed between the engine valve and the valve operating cam for retaining the engine valve at its closed position, with a valve-opening force provided by the valve-operating cam being accumulated by the valve-opening resilient member. The closed-position retaining means is arranged to be switchable between a retaining state and a releasing state to control the timing of opening the engine valve depending upon the operational condition of the engine.
