Abstract:
Compounds of formulaR.sub.1 O--(CH.sub.2).sub.m --S--S--(CH.sub.2).sub.p --S].sub.x S--(CH.sub.2).sub.n --OR.sub.2wherein R.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are, independently, hydrogen, C.sub.1-5 alkyl or a physiologically-hydrolyzable and -acceptable acid residue; m and n are, independently, 2 or 3; p is an integer of fron 2 to 6; and x is 1, 2 or 3; whereby when x is 2 or 3, each p may be the same or different, having immunostimulant activity.
Abstract:
The invention presents devices for controlled descent from buildings. Such a device includes a housing having a primary spool about which a cord is wound, a payload coupler for attaching a harness assembly to the housing, and an unwind control assembly for controlling the rate of exit of the cord from the housing. An inventive device kit may include a convertible storage unit used to protectively store a device and which, upon deployment, may be used as a protective helmet. In using an inventive device, a user attaches the device to a fixture in a building, dons a harness and the converted helmet, attaches the device to the harness, and exits the building from a window or roof.
Abstract:
An improved variable resistor at least partially compensates for non-linearities in an electrical circuit containing a heating element, for example, a thin-film heating element. A controllable heater includes a heating element, a voltage source (for example, a standard AC electrical outlet) coupled to the heating element, and a variable resistor coupled to the heating element and voltage source. The variable resistor includes a fixed resistive element (for example, one or more thin-film resistors) and a moveable element such as a slider control. The moveable element adjustably contacts the fixed resistive element at a contact point associated with the position such that the variable resistor has a resistance that is at least partially non-linearly related to the position, but wherein the heating element has a dissipated power that is at least partially linearly related to the position of the variable resistor. Such a system may be used in conjunction with a vapor-delivery device to provide more linear control over the intensity of fragrance provided within an environment.
Abstract:
A vapor dispensing device having a high transverse loading stability includes a relatively low profile with respect to the supporting wall or electrical receptacle such that the frequency and impact of accidental physical contact with the device are appropriately reduced. To achieve a low profile, the housing of a vapor dispensing device is designed such that the distance from the outlet face of the wall receptacle to a worst-case transverse loading point (dL) is less than the distance from the plug to a worst-case support point (dS).
Abstract:
The present invention concerns new heterocyclic compounds of the formula: ##SPC1##WhereinR.sub.1 and R.sub.2 are inter alia alkyl, chlorine or methoxy,R.sub.3 is hydroxy, alkylcarboxy or monoalkylcarbamoyloxy, andA is protected or unprotected carbonyl. The compounds possess analgesic and central nervous system depressant properties.
Abstract:
A method for determining a clock for a sensor signal which has a synchronization signal, which method involves a control unit measuring the period between a first edge and a second edge of the synchronization signal, wherein both edges are either rising or falling, and the control unit taking the period as a basis for determining a clock for sampling data in the sensor signal.
Abstract:
A turbine blade of a gas turbine is disclosed. The turbine blade includes a blade pan, a blade root, and a platform positioned between the blade pan and the blade root. The turbine blade is provided with an anti-corrosion coating at least in regions, in particular on a lower side of the platform and/or in the transition region between the lower side of the platform and the blade root. The anti-corrosion coating is a diffusion coating having a chromium content in the surface region of more than 30% by weight.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for creating a vacuum-sealed package comprising the placement of the item to be vacuum packed in a container; sealing the container, placing a portion of the container in contact with a sealable chamber; sealing the chamber, creating holes in the container, evacuating the desired amount of air from the container and creating a seal between the interior of the container and the holes.

Abstract:
A system for manipulating energy transferred by members defining a joint. The system includes a first attachment structure configured to be attached to a first member of the joint and a second attachment structure configured to be attached to a second member of the joint. There is also an adjustable energy absorbing device attached to the first attachment structure and second attachment structure, wherein adjusting the energy absorbing device changes the load manipulating characteristics of the energy absorbing device.
