A method of sizing paper, comprising applying thereto a sizingly effective amount of a polymer selected from the group consisting of:(a) homopolymers of .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethyl-m-isopropenyl benzyl amine or .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethyl-p-isopropenyl benzyl amine;(b) copolymers of (i) .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethyl-m-isopropenyl benzyl amine or .alpha.,.alpha.-dimethyl-p-isopropenyl benzylamine, and (ii) at least one other ethylenically unsaturated monomer copolymerizable therewith; and(c) acid salts of said homopolymers (a) and copolymers (b).Such homopolymers or copolymers suitably may be prepared as the hydrolysis reaction products of the corresponding homopolymeric or copolymeric isocyanates.

The compositions cure to coatings with excellent properties, and they can be used as binders for fillers such as insulating glass and foundry sand.

Disclosed are novel nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds and novel vinyl terminated polyurethane/polyamide polymers together with the use of both of these compounds in a novel adhesive and coating composition. The nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds of the invention contain two vinyl-terminated substituents and at least one carbamylmethyl substituent and have a nucleus selected from melamine, oligomers of melamine, benzoguanamine, and oligomers of benzoguanamine, glycoluril and oligomers of glycoluril, cyclohexylguanamine, oligomers of cyclohexylguanamine, acetoguanamine, and oligomers of acetoguanamine. The vinyl terminated polyurethane compounds of the invention have a molecular weight of from about 3000 to about 80000, and contain at least two vinyl end groups.

Novel alkylcarbamylmethyl aminotriazines self-cure and also function as crosslinkers for compounds containing active hydrogen groups. When the active hydrogen-containing compounds are hydroxylated polymers, coatings are provided with exceptional resistance to detergent and salt-spray exposure and improved abrasion resistance. The novel aminotriazines also can be combined with fillers as binders which when cured provide shaped articles of manufacture, such as insulation and foundry core molds.
