Disclosed are novel nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds and novel vinyl terminated polyurethane/polyamide polymers together with the use of both of these compounds in a novel adhesive and coating composition. The nitrogen containing heterocyclic compounds of the invention contain two vinyl-terminated substituents and at least one carbamylmethyl substituent and have a nucleus selected from melamine, oligomers of melamine, benzoguanamine, and oligomers of benzoguanamine, glycoluril and oligomers of glycoluril. The vinyl terminated polyurethane compounds of the invention have a molecular weight of from about 3000 to about 80000, and contain at least two vinyl end groups.

A suitable coating composition comprises solutions of copolymer of methyl methacrylate and lauryl methacrylate in toluene and methyl ethyl ketone, titanium dioxide, alkyl ammonium montmorillonite, dicyclohexyl phthalate, butyl benzyl phthalate nitrocellulose, "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate, butyl acetate, toluene, xylene and a silicone solution in toluene. The present invention relates to a coating composition for fibrous substrates made up of 0.5 to 25 percent by weight of a water-insoluble emulsion polymer comprising from greater than 0.4 to 3 mole percent of one or more cationic monomer units and at least 50 mole percent of at least one vinyl ester monomer; 25 to 75 percent by weight pigment; cationic surfactant; and water. The coating is useful on fibrous substrates on which liquid inks will be fixed. The cationic nature of the coating provides the substrate with an excellent point of attachment for anionic inks and dyes, resulting in bright, crisp printed images. The coating is especially useful for ink-jet printing on paper, paperboard, textiles, non-wovens, and wood.
