摘要: A surgical penetration instrument has an elongated shaft and a penetrating tip extending from the distal end of the shaft. A blade extends outwardly from the penetrating tip. The blade is transparent. When the penetrating tip is transparent, the tip not only facilitates penetration through bodily tissue but also acts as an imaging element in conjunction with an endoscope extending through the shaft of the instrument to simultaneously visualize the surgical field during penetration. Significantly, unlike a conventional metallic blade, the transparent blade will not obstruct the field of view as the instrument is advanced. When the penetrating tip is plastic, and the blade is composed of a transparent plastic, the blade can be joined to the tip using conventional plastic processing methods such as injection molding, thus reducing manufacturing costs incurred if a metallic blade were used. Also disclosed is a surgical penetration instrument with a plastic penetrating tip and a protective cap fitting over and enclosing a portion of the tip to prevent or lessen the possibility of breaking, cracking or otherwise damaging the tip.

摘要: The invention provides a method for preparing an aqueous dispersion of polymer particles comprising the following steps: (i) preparing a dispersion having a continuous aqueous phase, a dispersed organic phase comprising one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, and an amphiphilic RAFT agent as a stabiliser for said organic phase, and (ii) polymerising said one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers under the control of said amphiphilic RAFT agent to form said aqueous dispersion of polymer particles, novel amphiphilic RAFT agents for use in this method, novel RAFT agents useful in making these amphiphilic RAFT agents and methods for their manufacture.

摘要: A localization mechanism, or fixture, is used in conjunction with a breast coil for breast compression and for guiding a core biopsy instrument during prone biopsy procedures in both open and closed Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines. The localization fixture includes a three-dimensional Cartesian positionable guide for supporting and orienting an MRI-compatible biopsy instrument, and, in particular, a sleeve to a biopsy site of suspicious tissues or lesions. A z-stop enhances accurate insertion, prevents over-insertion or inadvertent retraction of the sleeve. The sleeve receives a probe of the MRI-compatible biopsy instrument and may contain various features to enhance its imagability, to enhance vacuum and pressure assist therethrough, etc.

摘要: A breathing gas cooling and heating device. Warm breathing gas enters the it which consists of a heat exchanger mounted in an insulated shell and runs through the heat exchanger tubes. These tubes are in intimate thermal contact with micro-encapsulated phase change materials. The micro-encapsulated phase change material changes phase from solid to liquid, thereby absorbing heat at the temperature of the phase change material, and thereby cooling the gas flowing through the heat exchanger. In situations where heating of the breathing gas is desired, the gas stream absorbs heat from the phase change material. The unit is rechargeable for chilling applications after usage by placing the device in an ambient environment less than the temperature of the phase change of the material or by replacing the phase change material. It is rechargeable for heating applications by warming the device to a temperature above that of the phase change material. The unit circumvents the need for ice, the most commonly available chilling medium, in situations where ice or other cooling is not available. Additionally, the unit can be used by filling it with an ice water slurry for fire fighting applications where ice is readily available. The gas then exits the device in a chilled state. The device is designed to work in conjunction with numerous existing breathing apparatus by virtue of the in-line installation capability to existing systems.

摘要: Systems and methods for recovering unmanned aircraft and controlling post-recovery motion of the aircraft are disclosed herein. An aircraft recovery system for handling an unmanned aircraft in accordance with one embodiment of the disclosure includes a base portion and an elongated aircraft capture member having a first end movably coupled to the base portion and a second, free end opposite the first end. The aircraft capture member includes a first portion and a second portion at a distal end of the first portion and positioned to intercept an unmanned aircraft in flight. The first and/or second portions are generally flexible. The system further includes an energy capture and dissipation assembly operably coupled to the aircraft capture member and positioned to receive at least a portion of the landing forces from the aircraft.
