Abstract: A patient-specific device for guiding resection of a tumor located in local tissue of a patient includes a locator form and a surgical guidance cue. The locator form has a locator-form surface matching a surface of the local tissue of the patient near the tumor's location when the local tissue is imaged in a preoperative position, such that the locator form, when fit to the surface of the local tissue, restores the local tissue to the preoperative position. The surgical guidance cue is integrally formed with the locator form and based on images including only preoperative images of the local tissue in the preoperative position, to indicate a spatial property of the tumor in the preoperative position.

Abstract: A method and system are used to enhance a marker material to include a plurality of air bubbles. The method of manufacturing a marker includes enhancing a marker material to include a plurality of air bubbles using at least a first EFD and a second EFD. The method may include cycling repeatedly through a transfer process between a first container and a second container. A system for enhancing a marker material includes a transfer apparatus configured to receive a marker material and a selected amount of air. The system comprises a first EFD coupled to a first end of the transfer apparatus and a second EFD coupled to a second end of the transfer apparatus.

Abstract: A system for constructing fluoroscopic-based three-dimensional volumetric data of a target area within a patient from two-dimensional fluoroscopic images including a structure of markers, a fluoroscopic imaging device configured to acquire a sequence of images of the target area and of the structure of markers, and a computing device. The computing device is configured to estimate a pose of the fluoroscopic imaging device for at least a plurality of images of the sequence of images based on detection of a possible and most probable projection of the structure of markers as a whole on each image of the plurality of images. The computing device is further configured to construct fluoroscopic-based three-dimensional volumetric data of the target area based on the estimated poses of the fluoroscopic imaging device.

Abstract: Apparatus, systems, and methods are provided for localizing lesions within a patient's body, e.g., within a breast. The system may include one or more markers implantable within or around the target tissue region, and a probe for transmitting and receiving electromagnetic signals to detect the one or more markers. During use, the marker(s) are into a target tissue region, and the probe is placed against the patient's skin to detect and localize the marker(s). A tissue specimen, including the lesion and the marker(s), is then removed from the target tissue region based at least in part on the localization information from the probe.

Abstract: A method for marking a biopsy site after a biopsy has been performed includes the steps of placing a marker in the form of a semi-permeable membrane at the biopsy site so that the marker can be found at a later time, inserting a needle into the marker at the later time which is preferably immediately before a planned surgical resection of the biopsy site, and injecting a dye directly into the marker to color the marker. The semi-permeable qualities of the marker facilitate the slow egress of dye into tissue that is immediately adjacent the marker, enlarging the footprint of the marker. The semi-permeable membrane includes a high percentage of water after reaching osmotic equilibrium, rendering the marker highly visible under ultrasound imaging. The semi-permeable membrane may take the form of a fully or partially dehydrated hydrogel.

Abstract: A template grid which attaches to an ultrasound stepper of a transrectal ultrasound unit providing transperineal guidance and support through adjustable angle apertures allowing for accurate targeting of a medical implant such as a needle to its intended target such as for purposes of perirectal spacer placement.
