In a tubing conveyed perforating gun assembly having shaped charges to perforate a well, an improved pressure sequence shaped charge detonator is included. The preferred form of device is appended to the bottom of the assembly to function as a backup detonator. First and second piston and cylinder assemblies in an elongate body provide pressure initiated arming and subsequent pressure initiated firing pin movement to achieve primer cord detonation for perforation of the well. The pressure sequence is controllable, selectively to a specified pressure to arm and thereafter to fire.

In an exposed perforating gun assembly, contact with well fluids at high pressure and temperature is detrimental to explosives in the explosive train. This device protects such explosives and includes a cylindrical housing with a bore having an electrical feedthrough at one end, an enclosed initiator, a cooperative sleeve and cooperative sealed retainer. The detonating cord is sealed into proximity with the initiator and is held against high pressure extrusion by the sealed retainer.

For use in a perforating gun assembly, a perforating gun detonator is disclosed. One embodiment is hermetically sealed while the other has openings therein to admit well fluids. In both embodiments, a narrow conductive metal foil is provided with a current to vaporize the narrow foil, explode the foil and propel a flyer driven by a shock wave for detonation of a spaced secondary explosive. The explosive then couples explosion into a detonating cord against a shoulder in a housing adjacent to the secondary explosive. The current is formed by means of an AC voltage multiplier circuit providing a charge on a capacitor which is discharged through a spark gap. Charging circuitry includes a blocking capacitor to prevent DC and a resistor for bleeding a small current from the capacitor to ground which prevents static or stray current accumulation.

In a tubing conveyed perforating gun assembly, a detonator is discharged by a weight bar dropped into the tubing string, subject to unintended sticking. The disclosed safety anchor includes a rope socket enabling the safety anchor to be lowered into the tubing string. The safety anchor has an elongate body connected below the rope socket by a shear pin. The body has a mandrel and sleeve construction cooperatively connected with a bottom located grapple cage around collet fingers enabling a fishing neck on the weight bar to be grasped and firmly held. A slip radially expands to lock the safety anchor in the tubing string, enabling the weight bar to be held against falling for safe retrieval.

A system and method for making and using a multi-point initiation explosive device that produces an enhanced pressure wave for severing tubing, pipe or casing in an oil or gas well. At least two opposed initiators initiate a column of explosive material from opposite ends, thereby generating opposing pressure waves propagating toward a midpoint between the initial initiators. A shaped-charge assembly with a liner located at the midpoint initiates immediately prior to the arrival of the opposing pressure waves and forms a fast moving jet to pre-score the target pipe prior to the arrival of the pressure pulse propagating from the initial detonations.

A microwave waveguide filter includes a main-line cavity structure with a group of at least two rectangular main-line cavities arrayed along a main propagation path and including a first main-line cavity and a second main-line cavity. Each main-line cavity includes a sidewall, and each pair of adjacent main-line cavities has a common transverse wall transverse to the main propagation path and a main-line aperture in the common transverse wall. A rectangular first feedback cavity is in microwave communication with each of the first main-line cavity and the second main-line cavity through the respective sidewall of the first main-line cavity and the second main-line cavity. There is a first-cavity feedback aperture between the first feedback cavity and the first main-line cavity, and a second-cavity feedback aperture between the first feedback cavity and the second main-line cavity. There may be additional feedback cavities as well.

An improved detonation transfer apparatus is set forth. In one embodiment, it incorporates a transverse bulkhead having selected explosive materials on both sides thereof. The bulkhead is shaped into a concave lens to focus the shock wave toward a focal point so that one of the explosive materials directs a shock wave into the other of the explosive materials, thereby triggering sufficient shock wave pressure for detonation. In an alternate embodiment, a blasting cap transfers detonation to a first secondary explosive material which forms a flyer; the flyer travels across the space, impacting with a metal transverse bulkhead which in turn transfers a shock wave through the bulkhead into another explosive shaped in the form of a pellet. This has a high impedance reflector plate in it. The reflector plate is approximately parallel to the transverse bulkhead so that shock wave reflection occurs at the plate and further increases shock wave pressure, thereby exceeding the levels necessary for detonation, and detonation is thereby transferred into the detonating cord.

An inner mandrel extends the full length of the bridge plug, and carries a top sub at its upper end for latching engagement with a conventional overshot to retrieve the plug. A tubular outer mandrel is slidably mounted on the inner mandrel for limited axial sliding movement. A partial central bore in the inner mandrel and coacting ports adjacent the upper ends of the two mandrels provide a valved bypass passage bridging the seal element. External slips are carried in a slip carrier axially fixed to the inner mandrel by shear screws. A tubular setting assembly consisting of a lower top wedge for expanding the external slips, an upper compression member, and an annular elastic seal element disposed for compression between the wedge and compression member, is yieldably secured to the outer mandrel by means of shear pins. Second yieldable shear pins couple the top wedge and compression member. The outer mandrel and tubular setting assembly are adapted to be coupled to electric line operated pressure setting apparatus for lowering the tool and for effecting upward pull of the mandrel and downward push of the setting assembly to set the tool. During the setting, the setting assembly first shears from the mandrel to set the top wedge and the seal element is then compressed. A bottom wedge assembly includes a collet wedge releasably coupled to the outer mandrel to be moved into engagement with the external slips, the setting movement of the collet wedge compressing a compression spring. For release of the bridge plug the coupling between the outer mandrel and collet wedge is released; and upward movement of the outer mandrel, provided by coupling to the inner mandrel, effects release of the collet wedges allowing the compression spring to retract the collet wedge, and picks up the compression sleeve and the top wedge to release the seal element and the top wedge.

A perforating gun assembly (110) for creating communication paths for fluid between a formation (114) and a cased wellbore (116) includes a housing, a detonator and a detonating cord (136). The perforating gun assembly (110) includes one or more substantially axially oriented collections of shaped charges (122, 124, 126) each of which is operably associated with the detonating cord (136). A perforation (152, 154) is formed in the formation (114) as a result of the interaction of jets (141, 142) formed upon the detonation of at least two shaped charges (122, 126) that create a weakened region (148) in the formation (114) followed by the detonation of at least one shaped charge (124) that forms a jet (150) that penetrated through the weakened region (148).
