摘要: A method and apparatus is disclosed for texturizing magnetic storage disks. The disk texturizing apparatus utilizes a combination of servomotors for rotating the disk and oscillating the disk towards and away from a texturizing media. The servomotors are controlled by a closed-loop control system which monitors and synchronizes the angular and linear position of the disk. Through such control, the disk rotation speed may be modulated in conjunction with the linear oscillation, thereby allowing a higher degree of triangularity in the texturization pattern. A pattern generation system and a graphical user interface for specifying, modeling, generating, modifying and displaying disk texturizing patterns are also disclosed. The texturizing pattern may be displayed in polar plot and linear plot form so that the user can more easily visualize and design the texturizing pattern. Warning signals are used when the texturizing pattern exceeds the acceleration or amplitude limitations of the physical texturizing apparatus, or when the designed pattern repeats. The pattern generation system may also be used to generate a data sequence describing a particular pattern which is exportable to the physical disk texturizing apparatus.

摘要: An apparatus and method for droplet steering is disclosed herein. A throated structure having a nozzle defines a converging throat with an inlet and an outlet and a vectored fluid stream directed therethrough. The fluid stream is driven through the system via a vacuum pump. As the fluid approaches the outlet, its velocity increases and is drawn away from the nozzle through a connecting channel. As a droplet is ejected from a liquid therebelow, it will have a first trajectory until it is introduced to the high velocity fluid stream at the perimeter of the interior walls of the nozzle. The fluid accordingly steers the momentum of the droplet such that it obtains a second or corrected trajectory. Alternative variations include an electrically chargeable member, e.g., a pin, positionable to be in apposition to the outlet and capillary tubes for controlling the ejection surface of the pool of source fluid.

摘要: A method and apparatus is disclosed for polishing the face of a semiconductor wafer. The wafer is held in position by a tooling head and is contacted by an abrasive pad. A table is provided on to which the abrasive pad is fixedly attached, both of which move in directions parallel to the face of the wafer being polished. A controller controls the motion of the table according to a predetermined polishing pattern and is capable of maintaining a constant velocity between the wafer and the abrasive pad. The tooling head includes a circular platen and a retention ring peripherally oriented about the outer edge of the platen which resists lateral forces on the wafer caused by engagement of the face of the wafer with the polishing surface. An adjustable coupling is mounted to the platen and the ring, and serves to adjustably position during polishing the height of the ring relative to the face of the wafer as well as to rigidly support during polishing the position of the retaining ring. A flexible disk is fixedly mounted between a support post and the platen and oriented substantially parallel to the face of the platen. The flexible disk is adapted to prevent rotation of the platen about the axis of the support post and to transmit forces between the platen and the post in directions parallel to the face of the platen.

摘要: A disk drive in which the radial alignment, track zero alignment, index to data timing, write current, asymmetry and threshold dropout can be electronically adjusted. A plurality of programs stored in random access memory run a plurality of adjustment procedures used to control the electronic adjustment functions of the disk drive. An alignment disk read by the disk drive provides alignment data for the radial, track zero and index to data alignment procedures. A microstepper circuit in the disk drive allows the read/write heads to be moved in discrete steps of approximately 1/126 of the track pitch for electronically adjusting the radial and track zero parameters. The index to data alignment is set by generating and storing an artifical index offset value. The write current and asymmetry adjustment procedures utilize digital to analog convertors (DACS) to vary the voltage supplied to the read/write heads. The threshold dropout procedure utilizes a DAC to control the output of a pulse detector.

摘要: A method for inscribing data onto a magnetic medium (12) wherein portions of an oxide coating (16) of the medium are removed from the medium (12) to create voids (88) while the oxide coating (16) is left undisturbed on areas adjacent to the voids (88). The adjacent areas are then uniformly magnetized. When the medium is moved past a read head (78), changes in magnetic field present at transition points (82) and (84) between the voids (88) and the uniformly magnetized oxide coating (16) of adjacent areas cause a current to be induced in a coil (80) of the read (78) head which current is interpreted by conventional read circuitry as being a data bit. The data inscribed by this method is not erasable by conventional means. The inventive method may be practiced upon selected portions of a medium (12) such that non-erasable data areas and conventional magnetically erasable data areas can coexist on the same medium (12).

摘要: A diskette comprising a jacket, a liner material disposed within said jacket, a flat circular media having a magnetic coating on both sides disposed within said liner material, a hub attached at the center of said media, a plurality of servo grooves on at least one of said sides of said media that have stitched patterns that will alternate on-and-off at twenty kilohertz in the presence of a constant, unmodulated light source. The diskette is magnetically formatted with reference and data tracks recorded in such a way that extremely accurate position determinations can be made by looking at the analog amplitude of the detected tracks and comparing them at different head positions. The innermost tracks contain redundant copies of a disk mapping table that comprises data for a media type code, a sector size code, a sector interleave code, a total track count, a reassignment area starting address, a data area starting address, a total sector count, an update count, and a reassignment table having at least room for 250 entries of three bytes each.

摘要: An optical servo head and method for reading position information on a medium, such as a magnetic disk, having a plurality of optical servo tracks in the form of relatively nonreflective regions on a reflective surface of the medium. With a magnetic disk, the nonreflective regions comprise concentric grooves etched in the disk surface and the reflective regions comprise the land areas between the grooves. The optical servo head is mounted on a carriage/head assembly of a disk drive and comprises an infrared light emitting diode, a collection lens, a routing mirror and a multicell photodetector. The method of reading position information from the magnetic disk comprises the steps of illuminating the disk with the infrared diode, focusing the image of the optical tracks on the cells of the photodetector such that a linear signal will be generated as the optical tracks pass the photodetector cells, and generating a continuous output signal from the photodetector cell output which is used to control the positioning of the carriage/head assembly. The output signal can be directed through a synchronous detection circuit to improve the S/N contrast between the reflective and nonreflective areas. Additionally, the output signal can be routed to an alignment circuit comprising a pair of digital-to-analog converters, a pair of digital signal generators, an adder and an electronic filter and which electronically compensates for imprecision in the servo head - data head separation distance. Track sweeping without leaving the position loop is also accomplished through use of the alignment circuit.
