The protuberances extend at least partially into said recesses to form a fixed mounting and at least one floating mounting with an axial mounting play. The assembly ensures that the catalyst carrier body is permanently fixed, in particular during structure-borne vibrations that occur in the exhaust system of an internal combustion engine.

An assembly includes a honeycomb body secured by an inner casing tube in a housing, in particular a housing of an exhaust system of an internal combustion engine. The inner casing tube has an overall length which is bounded axially by two edges and is substantially smaller than the axial length of the honeycomb body. The inner casing tube is also disposed in an approximately axially central position around the honeycomb body and is connected, in particular brazed, thereto in at least one axial connection region. The inner casing tube has a region within the axial connection region in which it is connected to the honeycomb body on the inside or attached directly adjacent the latter on the outside and is connected to the housing. Regions of the inner casing tube which are not connected to the housing but are connected to the honeycomb body toward the inside are constructed as radially elastic spring elements. In this way, a resilient attachment, which adapts to deformations of the honeycomb body, is produced without tearing. That is advantageous in particular in the case of honeycomb bodies made of very thin sheet-metal layers, in particular thinner than 0.03 mm.

A corrugated casing with an outer side and an inner side is disposed between the honeycomb body and the housing. The corrugated casing is connected to the housing at attachment sections on the outer side thereof by brazing. The attachment sections lie substantially on a common circumferential line and have the narrowest possible width in direction of a longitudinal axis. The attachment sections have an overall surface area permitting them to securely hold the honeycomb body under operating conditions. A high retention degree for the connection between the honeycomb body and housing can thus be achieved even with a shrinking of the diameter of the honeycomb body at end sides during the service life thereof.

The honeycomb body has varying radial strength along its periphery. A compensation layer is disposed at least in partial regions of the periphery between the housing and the honeycomb body. The compensation layer has at least two support sections in the peripheral direction of the honeycomb body which exert greater forces in the radial direction upon the honeycomb body than outside the support sections in remaining peripheral regions. The support sections are disposed in regions where the honeycomb body has greater radial strength. Steps can be taken to produce the support sections on the compensation layer, by using support segments on the housing and/or beads on the honeycomb body, in each case in the peripheral regions of greater strength. The invention is particularly suitable for simple and sound installation of thin-walled extruded ceramic honeycomb bodies in metal housings.

In a device for the catalytic conversion of exhaust gases in an exhaust system, in particular an exhaust system of a combustion engine, and a process for manufacturing the same, a catalyst carrier body is provided with a multiplicity of channels through which an exhaust gas can flow. At least a part of a free flow cross-section of the channels is closed in an exhaust gas flow direction by plastic deformation of channel walls in an outer annular region of the catalyst carrier body. The plastic deformation can be carried out with a tool. The tool has a disk rotatable about an axle. The disk is pressed with force against the catalyst carrier body and the jacket so that a plastic deformation of the jacket tube and the channel walls occurs. A circumferential bead directed towards the carrier body is produced. Other techniques for plastic deformation are possible. The thus closed outer channels form a heat insulation with respect to the jacket tube, so that the catalyst carrier body heats up more quickly in a cold-starting phase.
