Abstract: A method for estimating resistivity and dielectric constant values of a multi-layer subterranean formation acquiring electromagnetic propagation measurements of the subterranean formation and processing the measurements via inversion to compute the resistivity and dielectric constant values. A one-dimensional formation model is utilized including a plurality of formation layers in which each of the formation layers includes a resistivity value and a dielectric constant value.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for clay detection, clay typing, and clay volume quantification using electromagnetic measurements on a porous media sample at a low frequency less than 5000 Hz. The electromagnetic measurements are used to determine and store permittivity data that characterizes permittivity of the porous media sample at the low frequency less than 5000 Hz. The low frequency electromagnetic measurements can be performed in a laboratory, at a wellsite or other surface location. The low frequency electromagnetic measurements are nondestructive, and the results indicate that the methods and systems are highly sensitive to the existence of clays.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided for characterizing formation water salinity of subsurface formation using multifrequency permittivity data over a range of frequencies below 1 MHz. The multifrequency permittivity data is processed to determine salinity of formation water contained in the subsurface formation. Other useful formation properties (such as formation water saturation) can be determined based on the formation water salinity.

Abstract: A technological solution for locating and evaluating resistive targets in a space between a pair of wellbores, at least one of which includes a metallic casing. The solution includes injecting an electric current into the metallic casing of one of the pair of wellbores to energize the metallic casing as a dipole transmitter and leak the current into a formation to form variable electric fields; detecting inside the other wellbore of the pair, by an electric field receiver, the variable electric fields; and measuring, by the electric field receiver, the variable electric fields as a function of time; and generating a resistivity map of the formation based on the measurements of the variable electric fields.

Abstract: An electromagnetic (EM) data acquisition method for a geological formation may include operating EM measurement devices to determine phase and amplitude data from the geological formation. The EM measurement devices may include at least one first EM measurement device within a borehole in the geological formation, and at least one second EM measurement device at a surface of the geological formation. The method may further include processing the phase data independent from the amplitude data to generate a geological constituent map of the geological formation, and identifying different geological constituents in the geological constituent map based upon the measured amplitude data.

Abstract: Electromagnetic (EM) survey processing comprising operating an electronic device to model expected EM field components to be measured by an EM apparatus associated with a subterranean formation, wherein the EM apparatus comprises at least one EM source and at least one EM receiver. The electronic device may be operated to determine one or more ratios of the modeled EM field components. The at least one EM source may be operated to emit an EM signal into the subterranean formation, and the at least one EM receiver may be operated to measure actual EM field components of the EM signal. The electronic device may then be operated to compare the one or more ratios of the modeled EM field components with one or more ratios of the actual EM field components. The one or more ratios of the modeled EM field components may then be updated based on the comparison.
