Thus, the reciprocal movement of the double-headed pistons, resulting from the expansion and compression of an operating gas in the front and rear spaces, are directly converted into the rotary movement of the swash plate. Hence, the Stirling engine has a very simplified construction.

A hydraulic driving system uses a variable capacity type swash plate piston pump that discharges a fixed quantity of operation oil. The piston pump is provided with a swash plate and a swash-plate tilt angle control mechanism. The pump is operated by the engine to drawing discharge oil whose quantity corresponds to the tilt angle of the swash plate. An oil passage provided with a restriction, is connected to the discharge side of the piston pump. A control valve functions in accordance with the pressure difference between the input and output sides of that restriction to feed operation oil to the tilt angle control mechanism via the oil passage. A tilt angle generating mechanism in the tilt angle control mechanism, causes the oil controlled by the control valve to act on the swash plate in order to increase its tilt angle. A tilt angle return mechanism in the tilt angle control mechanism urges the swash plate to decrease the tilt angle. A switching valve is provided between the tilt angle generating mechanism and the control valve, and is switchable between at two positions. With the valve located at the first switching position, the action of the operation oil to the tilt angle generating mechanism is suppressed. With the valve set at the second switching position, the operation oil is allowed to act on the tilt angle generating mechanism via the control valve. Consequently, when the pump is driven, the tilt angle is minimized to reduce the load on the engine.

An automotive heating apparatus includes a cylinder block forming an enclosed space therein, the gear pump means enclosed in the cylinder block, and a water jacket formed in the cylinder block outside the gear pump means. The gear pump means includes an input shaft connected to an engine and disposed in the enclosed space, a driving gear fixed to the input shaft and disposed in the enclosed space, a driven gear meshing with the driving gear and disposed in the enclosed space, and a viscous fluid sealed in the enclosed space. In the automotive heating apparatus, the viscous fluid is forcibly transferred from a suction side to a discharge side by the rotation of the driving gear and the driven gear, and at the same time there is caused a back flow of the viscous fluid resulting from an internal leakage from the discharge side to the suction side. Thus, the automotive heating apparatus stirs and shears the viscous fluid and increases the viscous fluid internal energy in the enclosed space, and it converts the heat generated by the viscous fluid to a temperature increment of circulating water through the water jacket. Hence, the automotive heating apparatus can not only achieve the heating in the automotive passenger room relatively quickly after starting the engine, but also produces a good on-boardability and a reduction in the manufacturing cost.

A piston for use in a compressor that compresses gas containing lubricating oil is disclosed. The compressor has a crank chamber and cylinder bores for accommodating the pistons. A swash plate is located in the crank chamber and is supported on a drive shaft for integrally rotating with the drive shaft. The swash plate is operably connected to the pistons by shoes to convert the rotation of the drive shaft to reciprocation of each piston. Each piston has a head for compressing the gas supplied to the cylinder bore and a skirt projecting from the head toward the crank chamber. The skirt has a slot for receiving the swash plate by means of the shoes. A rib is formed on an inner wall of the slot and extends parallel to the axis of the piston. When the swash plate rotates, swirling gas in the crank chamber collides against the rib. When the gas collides against the rib, the oil contained in the gas separates from the gas and is guided to the shoes.

By supplying the pressure in the discharge chamber 21 via a pressure supply passage 35 to retract the spool 32 from the crank chamber 5, the rotary swash plate 14 is permitted to move to the position where the discharge displacement to the discharge chamber 21 becomes zero.

A variable capacity type swash plate compressor includes a novel hinge means. The hinge means includes a supporter arm, a main guide pin, and an auxiliary guide pin. The supporter arm is disposed on the rotor projectably therefrom toward the swinging swash plate, and has a main guide hole extending perpendicularly with the driving shaft. The main guide pin is inserted rotatably into the main guide hole. The auxiliary guide pin is inserted slidably into a hole, formed in one of the main guide pin and the swinging swash plate, perpendicularly with the main guide pin at one end, and it is fixed to another one of the main guide pin and the swinging swash plate at the other end. With the hinge means, the top clearances of the pistons can be always maintained virtually uniformly, and the moments resulting from the compression reactive forces can be inhibited from interfering with the discharge capacity control. Additionally, the compressor can attain the reduction in the manufacturing costs.

The plug element of the sealing plug device is provided with a handle portion extending laterally from the body portion thereof to permit the sealing plug device to be easily removed from the inlet port and/or outlet port of the compressor.
