Portable data carriers are provided each containing a non-volatile memory for storing money balances. Also, at a wholesaler location or the like, a terminal device connectable to at least one of the host computers is provided. The portable data carriers are insertable into the automated teller machines to transfer money from a bank account to the portable data carrier inserted in the automated teller machine. Also, the portable data carriers are insertable into the terminal device to transfer money from the inserted portable data carrier to a memory of the terminal device. Accumulated transactions in the terminal device are stored on another portable data carrier which is then taken to an automated teller machine to transfer the money from the portable data carrier to a bank account of the wholesaler or the like. Also, verification of the transaction is effected by transmitting data from the terminal device to a connected host computer.

A model and a workpiece are rotated synchronously, and a stylus is disposed for relative movement toward or away from the model in a direction perpendicular to the axis of rotation thereof for contact therewith. The amount of displacement of the stylus from its neutral point which occurs while it contacts the model is detected by a tracer head and is divided into a pair of components lying in a plane perpendicular to the axis of rotation of the model which are along the direction of said relative movement and along a direction orthogonal thereto. The distance between the center of rotation of the model and the center of the stylus is also detected, and is utilized together with the two orthogonal components of the displacement, the radius of the stylus, a reference displacement of the stylus as well as an established speed therefor in order to control the speed of rotation of the model and the speed of said relative movement between the stylus and the model so that the speed with which the point of contact between the stylus and the model moves along the contour of the model becomes equal to a preselected value. A workpiece and a tool therefor are disposed in a similar relationship as the relationship between the model and the stylus, and are driven in synchronism with the model and the stylus for profiling the workpiece. Where the tool contacts the workpiece over a certain width as with an abrasive belt, the contact segment of the stylus is angularly moved so as to follow the curved surface of the model, thereby detecting an angle of skew of the curved surface so that the angle of skew of the tool coincides with the detected angle.

A liquid-crystal cell is formed with first and second transparent substrates opposing each other and a liquid crystal sealed therebetween. A plurality of display electrodes are formed in a matrix arrangement with rows and columns on the inner surface of said first transparent substrate. Gate bus lines are formed on the first transparent substrate along the respective rows of display electrodes. Source bus lines are formed on the first transparent substrate along the respective columns of display electrodes. Thin-film transistors are formed on the first transparent substrate at the intersections of a gate and source bus lines. The thin-film transistors each have a gate electrode connected to the associated gate bus line, a source electrode connected to the associated source bus line and the drain electrode connected to the corresponding display electrode. A common electrode is formed on the second transparent substrate such that it faces the display electrodes. The opposed sides of the source and drain electrodes of each thin-film transistor are constituted by tapered surfaces with the distance therebetween progressively decreased as they approach the first transparent substrate. Ohmic contact layers are formed on these tapered surfaces. A semiconductor of each thin-film transistor is formed over the source and drain electrodes via the ohmic contact layers.
