A cutting device for an electric shaver comprising an outer cutter and a plurality inner blades that are made of a ferrous alloy comprising a substrate of an Fe-Cr stainless steel and a hardened layer of improved hardness and wear resistance. The substrate has a Vickers hardness of 400 or more. The hardened layer has a Vickers hardness of at least 700 and a thickness of 2 to 15 .mu.m. In particular, it is preferred that the hardened layer is a diffusion layer comprising at least 90 vol % of intermetallic compounds of Al and Fe relative to a total volume of the diffusion layer, and Al content included within a depth of at least 2 .mu.m of the diffusion layer is 35 to 65% by weight based upon total weight of a region of the diffusion layer ranging up to the thickness of at least 2 .mu.m. When the ferrous alloy is polished to form the outer cutter and inner blades, it is possible to provide sharp cutting edges of the outer cutter and inner blades, while preventing the occurrence of burrs or micro-chippings at the cutting edges.

An intermetallic-compound coated stainless steel having excellent rigidity, toughness, wear resistance and corrosion resistance comprises a substrate of a martensite stainless steel having a Vickers hardness of 400 or more, and a hard film having a bottom surface adhered to the substrate and an exposed top surface. The hard film has an outermost layer made of a compound selected from the group consisting of a Ti—Ni intermetallic compound, Ti—Fe intermetallic compound, and a mixture of the Ti—Ni intermetallic compound and a Ti—Cu intermetallic compound. The coated stainless steel can be produced by cladding an outer sheet made of Ti or a Ti alloy to a martensite stainless steel sheet directly or through an intermediate sheet made of Ni, Fe or a Ni—Cu alloy, heating the laminate at a temperature of 900° C. to 1150° C. for 30 seconds to 5 minutes, and then cooling the heated laminate at a cooling rate of 1° C./sec or more.

An electrode of a discharge lamp which has an improved adhesion between an emitter material and a filament is formed in accordance with the following method. That is, a Fe-Cr-Al alloy is used as the filament. The filament is placed in a heated oxidizing environment to precipitate an aluminum oxide layer uniformly in a surface thereof. Thus precipitated aluminum oxide layer has good adhesion with the filament without flaking thereof. The aluminum oxide layer is coated with triple carbonates consisting of barium carbonate, calcium carbonate and strontium carbonate, so that a carbonate coated filament is obtained. And then, the coated filament is heated in vacuum to reduce the carbonates to their alkaline earth oxides of the emitter material, and also to form a complex oxide consisting of the aluminum oxide and the alkaline earth oxides. Adhesion between the emitter material and the aluminum oxide layer is improved by the formation of the complex oxide, so that a lamp life of the discharge lamp is remarkably increased. On the other hand, since the Fe-Cr-Al alloy has a much higher specific resistance value than tungsten, the discharge lamp using the filament of the Fe-Cr-Al alloy can be operated by a small current, which in turn enables a lamp driving circuit to be reduced in size and weight.

An inner cutter for a dry shaver is fabricated from a metal plate to have a plurality of blades each provided with cutting edges. The metal plate includes a plurality of parallel straight slits to leave an array of straight beams each defined between the adjacent ones of the slits. The beams are forged and ground at a segment of each beam to give the cutting edges thereto. After making the cutting edges, the metal plate is bent into a generally U-shaped configuration so as to correspondingly curve the beams and shape the beams into the blades having the arcuate contour and the cutting edges. The metal plate is provided with a joint for connection with a driving source of moving the inner cutter relative to an outer cutter.
