A variable venturi-type carburetor comprising a vacuum chamber, connected to a venturi portion of the carburetor, and a suction piston actuated in response to a change in vacuum in the vacuum chamber. A fuel passage is formed in the carburetor and is open to the intake passage of the carburetor. The suction piston has a needle extending through the fuel passage. An air bleed passage is connected to the fuel passage. When the level of vacuum in the intake passage becomes smaller than a predetermined level, the amount of air fed into the fuel passage from the air bleed passage is reduced, and the vacuum chamber is caused to be open to the atmosphere.

A speed or gear reduction mechanism is coupled between a motor and the throttle valve. A sensor detects the rotational position, i.e., the rotational angle, of the motor and has a movable section and a fixed sensing section. The movable section is attached to a rotary shaft of the motor, so that the movable section rotates as the rotary shaft rotates. The fixed sensing section is mounted to the throttle body and is disposed within the movable section. By detecting the rotation of the motor a computing section can accurately determine the degree of opening of the throttle valve. The sensor outputs the degree of opening of the throttle valve.

A throttle control apparatus for an internal combustion engine in which wear particles due to sliding between components and vibration wear particles produced between components by engine vibrations are prevented from entering the area between a brush of a throttle sensor and a sensor substrate to prevent the occurrence of a contact failure between the brush and the substrate, thereby making it possible to detect an accurate throttle opening. A brush of a sensor unit is secured to an outer end portion of a throttle shaft projecting from a cover, and the sensor unit is accommodated in a sensor chamber formed outside the cover. A gear chamber for accommodating gears and the sensor chamber are isolated from each other by a dust seal. Therefore, wear particles will not enter the sensor chamber and accumulate in the area between the brush and the sensor substrate to cause a contact failure.
