A method of regulating cholesterol levels in a patient by administering an effective amount of a composition chosen from the group consisting of PAZ, specific components isolated from PAZ, chemically synthesized analogs of the components of PAZ, and regulating genes involved in lipoprotein metabolism. A method of treating high cholesterol levels in an individual by administering an effective amount of a microbial fermentation product, up-regulating the expression of at least one of the genes that encode ABCA1, ApoA1, and SRB1, and down-regulating the gene that encodes CETP. A method of preventing the onset of high cholesterol levels and/or a deleterious lipoprotein profile in an individual.

摘要: The present invention provides a purified and isolated DNA-binding protein, HPBF, which specifically binds to the promoter region of the Her-2/neu (ERBB2/c-erbB-2) gene sequence, the presence of which provides an early indication of transition to a cancerous state has been found. The present invention also provides bioassays for screening substances for the ability to inhibit HPBF activity, the ability to inhibit the mitogenic activity of HPBF and the ability to inhibit HPBF production. The present invention further provides methods of inhibiting the biological activity mediated by HPBF comprising preventing the HPBF from binding to the promoter region of the ERBB2 gene sequence.

摘要: Water-soluble fluorinated analogs of natural curcumin, and particularly difluoro Knoevenagel condensates and Schiff bases, along with their corresponding copper (H) complexes have improved bioavailablity over curcumin. The fluorine-substituted analogs of curcumin are useful as chemopreventive and/or therapeutic agents against cancers and/or against the development of drug-resistant cancer. A preferred compound is (IE,6E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)hepta-1,6-diene{4(3,4 difluorobenzaldehyde)}-3,5-dione.
