A method for making an inkjet printhead nozzle plate from a composite strip containing a nozzle layer and an adhesive layer is disclosed. The adhesive layer is coated with a polymeric sacrificial layer prior to laser ablating the flow features in the composite strip. A method is also provided form improving adhesion between the adhesive layer and the sacrificial layer. Once the composite strip containing the sacrificial layer is prepared, the coated composite strip is then laser ablated to form flow features in the strip in order to form the nozzle plates. After forming the flow features, the sacrificial layer is removed individual inkjet printhead nozzle plate are separated from the composite strip by singulating the nozzle plates with a laser.

A nozzle plate for an ink jet print head and method therefor is provided. The nozzle plate has a polymeric layer, an adhesive layer attached to the polymeric layer defining a nozzle plate thickness and ablated portions of the polymeric layer and adhesive layer defining flow feature of the nozzle plate which contain ink flow channels, firing chambers, nozzle holes, an ink supply region and one or more projections of polymeric material in the ink supply region of the nozzle plate. The one or more projections are selected from the group consisting of an elongate portion of polymeric material having an ablated portion surrounding the elongate portion, partially ablated spaced elongate fingers having a height which is less than the thickness of the nozzle plate which are parallel to and offset from the ink flow channels, and a plurality of spaced projections having a height which is less than the thickness of the nozzle plate extending from the flow feature surface adjacent the ink flow channels having a spacing between adjacent projections which is sufficient to trap debris before the debris enters the ink flow channels to the firing chambers.

The invention is directed to an ink jet printhead assembly for jetting a supply of ink onto a print medium. A printhead includes a substrate and a plurality of heater elements mounted on the substrate. A nozzle plate is attached to the printhead. The nozzle plate and/or substrate includes an ink feed channel and a plurality of ink chambers. The nozzle plate includes a plurality of ink emitting orifices and a plurality of non-emitting orifices. Each ink emitting orifice is associated with a respective one of the ink chambers and is positioned adjacent to a respective one of the heater elements. Each ink chamber is in fluid communication with the ink feed channel at a first fluid port and in fluid communication with a respective one of the non-emitting orifices at a second fluid port.

A process is provided for forming a heater chip module comprising a carrier adapted to be secured to an ink-filled container, at least one heater chip having a base coupled to the carrier, and at least one nozzle plate coupled to the heater chip. The carrier includes a support substrate having at least one passage which defines a path for ink to travel from the container to the heater chip. The heater chip is secured at its base to a portion of the support substrate. At least the portion of the support substrate is formed from a material having substantially the same coefficient of thermal expansion as the heater chip base. A flexible circuit is coupled to the heater chip module such as by TAB bonding or wire bonding.

The invention described in the specification relates to an ink jet printhead structure having semiconductor substrate containing energy imparting devices for ejecting ink through nozzle holes in a nozzle plate, to a method for making a printhead structure and to a printer cartridge containing the printhead structure. In order to reduce stresses induced in the structure during manufacturing and/or use thereof, a polymeric layer is disposed between the semiconductor substrate and nozzle plate which contains expansion void spaces or valleys sufficient to inhibit stresses in the structure during a process for bonding the nozzle plate to the polymeric layer thereby reducing misalignment and warpage problems associated with conventional printhead structures.

Separate adhesive is avoided in the manufacture of a thermal ink jet printhead by positioning a thermoplastic nozzle plate (1) on a semiconductor circuit chip (3) and electrically firing the ink ejection resistors (5) in a controlled amount to melt the lower surface in contact with the chip while not damaging the body of the nozzle plate. The resistors are fired in their intended pattern of operation during use so not to damage the resistors. Additional resistors may be added just for this bonding operation if needed with particular chip designs.
