Abstract: A medical device, such as a patient support apparatus or a thermal control unit, includes a plurality of mechanical components and a plurality of nodes adapted to communicate with each other over a local network onboard the medical device, and a gateway in communication with an off-board network. The gateway translates messages between the onboard and off-board networks, manages subscriptions to content of the local network, controls bidirectional communication, and otherwise oversees communications between the local and remote networks. The gateway utilizes a configuration file for managing the communications between the off-board and onboard networks, and the gateway is configured to switch to using new or modified configuration files without requiring a reboot or power cycle of the gateway. Updates to the communications between the onboard and off-board networks can therefore be implemented without any downtime and/or without requiring updates to software executables.

Abstract: A caregiver assistance system is disclosed for helping caregivers manage the care of existing bed sores and/or reduce the risk of a patient developing bed sores. The system may also help the caregiver to perform rounding tasks and/or to reduce the likelihood of patient falls. The system comprises a server application in communication with the patient's bed and one or more mobile electronic devices (e.g. smart phones). The mobile devices receive individual assessments of a plurality of bed sore risk factors and forward them to the server. The server generates bed sore risk scores from the answers and forward them to an EMR server. The server may also determine one or more risk reduction steps, display them on the mobile electronic device, and/or forward them to the patients' beds for implementation thereon. Additional bed sore information may be captured and sent to the EMR.

Abstract: Patient support apparatuses include a frame, support surface, and a controller. The controller provides notification to a user of a service event relating to the patient support apparatus. The controller limits functionality of a component of the patient support apparatus based upon a severity of the service event. The controller may also, or alternatively, detect when a control is activated by a user and, in response to such activation, determine whether the patient support apparatus has been marked for use or marked for servicing. If marked for use, the controller responds in a first manner, and if marked for service, the controller responds in a different manner. In other embodiments, a method is provided for determining an order in which multiple patient support apparatuses should be service. In still other embodiments, the patient support apparatus automatically changes to an unusable configuration when in need of high priority service.

Abstract: A caregiver assistance system helps caregivers manage the care of patients and the beds that support the patients. The system monitors tasks associated with the patients, such as caregiver rounding tasks, bed sore assessments, and/or fall risk assessments, and forwards completed tasks to an EMR server. The system also monitors the state of the beds and determines compliance with one or more healthcare facility protocols. Over time, the system gathers data from multiple beds regarding how often the beds are in compliance with the healthcare facility protocols and produces reports of the compliance levels to assist administrators in managing their healthcare facilities. The system may further monitor how quickly caregivers responds to one or more alert conditions relating to the beds and/or patients, and generate reports for the administrators regarding such response times.

The system includes one or more mobile electronic devices that are used to display data about beds and/or the patients assigned to them, and/or to receive data about the beds and/or the patients assigned to them. The system automatically associates data received from the mobile electronic device with a particular patient and/or a particular bed without requiring the user to manually identify the patient or the bed. The data may relate to images of skin conditions of the patient, service requests for the beds, and/or other data. The system may automatically forward service requests to a separate service server that communicates with service personnel.
