Abstract: We report a method comprising receiving a first indication to gather a first biological signal or feature thereof from a patient; gathering the first biological signal or feature thereof; receiving a second indication to stop gathering the first biological signal or feature thereof, wherein the second indication relates to a detection of an end of a brain state change; and stopping gathering the first biological signal or feature thereof. We also report a medical device system configured to implement the method. We also report a non-transitory computer readable program storage unit encoded with instructions that, when executed by a computer, perform the method.

Abstract: A system is described for determining, for a bipedal object (1) such as a human being or a robot, a fall risk measure that represents a risk for the bipedal object (1) to fall when walking. Acceleration value samples and angular velocity value samples associated with movement of a leg (2) of the bipedal object (1) are obtained and processed. Characterizing feature values are determined and used in determining the fall risk measure.

Abstract: Techniques are described herein for incorporating fall prevention into a personalized activity plan. In various embodiments, a baseline risk of fall for a user may be estimated (302) based on baseline sensor signal(s) (203, 205, 207). Based on a prediction model (215) (which may/may not be associated with the user) and the baseline risk of fall, respective risks of falls associated with various candidate activities may be predicted (304), and then candidate activities may be determined or selected (306) based on the predicted respective risks of falls. Output indicative of the determined candidate activities may be provided (308) to the user, who may provide input (310) identifying one or more of the determined candidate activities as an exercise conducted or to be conducted by the user. Based on the exercise sensor signal(s), a subsequent risk of fall for the user may be estimated (312) and used to update (314) the prediction model.

Abstract: A system for monitoring a user that includes a sensor unit configured and arranged to be disposed on the user, the sensor unit including an accelerometer and a communication arrangement; and at least one processor configured and arranged for performing actions including: receiving signals from the accelerometer of the sensor unit; determining a step count from the signals; determining a gait velocity from the signals; determining a step distance from the signals; determining a posture of the user from the signals; and determining a gait posture index as a function of the step count, gait velocity, step distance, and posture. In other embodiments, the system can be used to determine metrics other than the gait posture index, such as a fall prediction score based on gait velocity and posture deviation.

Abstract: One embodiment relates to a computer implemented method for detecting if a person has fallen in an environment comprising multiple people. The method comprises controlling an active reflected wave detector to measure wave reflections from the multiple people to receive measured wave reflection data that is obtained by the active reflected wave detector. The method further comprises detecting if a person has fallen in the environment using at least a portion of the measured wave reflection data, wherein a fall status of a nearest person in the environment, being a person of the multiple people that is nearest to the active reflected wave detector, is deterministic of a detected fall.

Abstract: A caregiver assistance system helps caregivers manage the care of patients and the beds that support the patients. The system monitors tasks associated with the patients, such as caregiver rounding tasks, bed sore assessments, and/or fall risk assessments, and forwards completed tasks to an EMR server. The system also monitors the state of the beds and determines compliance with one or more healthcare facility protocols. Over time, the system gathers data from multiple beds regarding how often the beds are in compliance with the healthcare facility protocols and produces reports of the compliance levels to assist administrators in managing their healthcare facilities. The system may further monitor how quickly caregivers responds to one or more alert conditions relating to the beds and/or patients, and generate reports for the administrators regarding such response times. In some embodiments, the system may further provide instructions to caregivers for operating features of the bed and/or compliance with healthcare facility protocols.

Abstract: A thermal image acquisitor (3) is attached to a wall (4) or a ceiling (5) on a side of a head of a care recipient (1) in a case where the care recipient lies on a bed (2), and captures an image of the bed and its surroundings from diagonally above to acquire a thermal image. Reference setting circuitry (12) sets two reference lines (8,9) respectively corresponding to a left end and a right end of the bed in the thermal image, and a reference height (10) for determining sitting-up of the care recipient. Heat source detection circuitry (13) detects a mass (11) of a heat source in the thermal image. State determination circuitry (14) determines a state of the care recipient from a positional relationship between a safe area (15) enclosed with the reference lines and the reference height and the mass of the heat source.
