Abstract: A support surface overlay system includes a support surface overlay and a control system. The support surface overlay includes at least one selectively inflatable compartment. The control system includes a pneumatic controller configured to inflate and deflate the at least one selectively inflatable compartment. The control system also includes a memory, a sensor, and a processor. The memory is programmed with a predetermined data indicative of an operating parameter of the system vs. time with the support surface overlay in an unloaded state. The sensor is configured to detect and provide signals indicative of the operating parameter of the system vs. time during inflation and/or deflation of the at least one selectively inflatable compartment. The processor is configured to compare the predetermined data to the data provided by the sensor and to determine whether or not a load is present on the support surface overlay based on the comparison.

Abstract: A patient support apparatus for supporting a patient wirelessly communicates with one or more tags using one or more RF transceivers. A controller onboard the patient support apparatus determines a position of the tag. The controller also receives an identifier from the tag and uses it to determine if the tag is attached to a patient or a device. If attached to a patient, the controller may allow a caregiver to activate a patient movement monitoring function. The movement monitoring function may monitor whether the patient exits the patient support apparatus, whether the patient has been turned, whether the patient is at risk of developing bed sores, and/or other aspects. If the tag is attached to a device, the controller automatically determines whether to associate the device with the patient support apparatus. The controller may also determine the location of the patient support apparatus from the RF transceivers.

Abstract: The present disclosure provides for, and includes, a method of detecting tissue damage before it is visible on a patient's skin, comprising: measuring a plurality of sub-epidermal moisture (SEM) values at a single location at incremental times, calculating a slope between the latest SEM value and the immediately prior SEM value, comparing this slope to a threshold value, and determining that there is tissue damage if the slope exceeds the threshold value.

Abstract: A system for monitoring medical conditions including pressure ulcers, pressure-induced ischemia and related medical conditions comprises at least one sensor adapted to detect one or more patient characteristic including at least position, orientation, temperature, acceleration, moisture, resistance, stress, heart rate, respiration rate, and blood oxygenation, a host for processing the data received from the sensors together with historical patient data to develop an assessment of patient condition and suggested course of treatment, including either suspending or adjusting turn schedule based on various types of patient movement. Compliance with Head-of-Bed protocols can also be performed based on actual patient position instead of being inferred from bed elevation angle. The sensor can include bi-axial or tri-axial accelerometers, as well as resistive, inductive, capacitive, magnetic and other sensing devices, depending on whether the sensor is located on the patient or the support surface, and for what purpose.

Abstract: A patient immersion sensor includes a radio detection and ranging (RADAR) apparatus to determine a time of flight (TOF) of a RADAR pulse and a reflected signal that is reflected by a patient or by a portion of a patient support surface supporting the patient. The TOF is indicative of an immersion depth or a distance toward bottoming out of a patient supported on the patient support surface, such as a mattress or a pad. The RADAR apparatus emits pulses of very short duration so as to be able to detect objects, such as a patient or a portion of a mattress or pad, at very close distances. The RADAR apparatus may use time-of-flight (TOF) between transmission of the pulse and receipt of a reflected signal to determine a distance toward bottoming out by the patient, thereby to determine if the patient is properly immersed into the patient support surface. Adjustments to inflation or deflation of one or more bladders are made to achieve a desired immersion amount within a tolerance range between upper and lower TOF thresholds.

Abstract: Systems, devices, and methods of the present application relate to the diagnostic measurement of condition for pressure ulcers. Preferred embodiments utilize pressure measurements at body locations to determine a diagnostic pressure ulcer value. A pressure sensor device generates patient pressure data that is processed by a data processor which utilizes a diagnostic function to determine the diagnostic value that indicates whether corrective action is needed to prevent pressure ulcer formation. One or more sensor devices can be attached to a patient to measure to transmit data for further processing.

Abstract: A system and method for measuring vital signs and motion from a patient comprising a plurality of sensors, each comprising a processor and analog-to-digital converter configured to generate the physiologic data waveform(s) from the sensor as synchronized, separately resolvable digital data comprising a header indicating the sensor from which the digital data originates, and to transmit the physiologic data waveform(s) to a processing system via a cable comprising a terminal connector that reversibly mates with one of a plurality functionally equivalent of connectors to operably connect the sensor to the processing system. The processing system receive sthe physiologic data waveforms and determines therefrom one or more vital signs for the individual, which are transmitted to a remote vital sign monitor.
