The TWA of an embodiment provides a plurality of differential amplifiers of the first type and an additional differential amplifier of the second type, where are they are connected between the input and the output of the TWA. The differential amplifiers of the first type provide a first delay from the input to the output, while, the differential amplifier of the second type provide a second delay longer than the first delay between the input and the output of the TWA.

The present invention provides an auto-power control (APC) circuit and a method to stabilize the extinction ratio of an optical output from a laser diode (LD) in an optical transmitter. The APC circuit according to the invention includes two feedback loops for the modulation IM and the bias current IB each having variable loop gain. The extinction ratio of the optical output from the LD is kept constant by setting the ratio of the loop gains of respective APC circuits to be ER−1.

The method to change the emission wavelength of a tunable LD is disclosed. In an ordinary state, the method monitors conditions not only relating to determine the emission wavelength but conditions independent of the emission wavelength by an ordinary A/D-C implemented within the controller. Responding to an instruction to switch the emission wavelength, the controller only monitors the former conditions affecting the determination of the emission wavelength. The sampling rate of the ordinary A/D-C is equivalently enhanced without installing an additional A/D-C.

A trans-impedance amplifier (TIA) for a light-receiving circuit is disclosed where the TIA reduces the power consumption as suppressing the degradation of the signal quality in high frequency regions. The TIA comprises a primary core, a dummy core, and a differential amplifier that receives each output of two cores in the differential mode. Two cores have an arrangement substantially same to each other except that the power consumption thereof is smaller in the dummy core. Because the output impedance of two cores becomes substantially equal, the scattering parameter of the common mode to the differential mode at the output of the primary core becomes small enough.

A driver circuit for an LD is disclosed. The circuit includes a decision unit, an offset adjustor, and an amplifier each having the differential configuration in an embodiment. The decision unit decides and generates a signal LOS that distinguishes the existence/absence of the input signal. The offset adjustor, depending on the signal from the decision unit, adds/compensate the offset thereof. The amplifier, whose output are pulled up to the power supply Vcc through an inductor. Because the output of the offset adjustor compensates the offset thereof during the absence of the input signal, the output of the amplifier does not cause overshoot or undershoot.

The LD driver includes an inverting amplifier, an emitter follower connected in down stream of the inverting amplifier, a driving transistor driven by the emitter follower, and a current-mirror circuit connected in series to the inverting amplifier. The mirror current generated from the current flowing in the inverting amplifier is provided to the output of the emitter follower served for discharging the input capacitance of the driving transistor.

An LD-Driver with a back termination circuit is disclosed. The back termination circuit of the invention provides a transistor as an active device, a current source to provide a bias current to the transistor, and a resistor as a passive element that couples the transmission lines carrying a differential signal thereon. Because the transistor shows a differential resistance of several tens of ohms by providing only a few milli-amperes, the output impedance of the LD-Driver may be substantially matched with the characteristic impedance of the transmission line with lesser additional power consumption.
