Structures and methods are provided for shielding field emitter devices from radiation. In one exemplary embodiment, a shielding layer inhibits radiation from degrading field emitter devices while exerting a predetermined force upon the field emitter devices so as to restrain from damaging the structure of the devices or affect the devices' electronic or electrical performance. In another exemplary embodiment, the field emitter under the protection of the shielding layer is capable of sustaining structural equilibrium. In yet another embodiment, the field emitter is capable of sustaining structural elasticity. In a further embodiment, the shielding layer may be comprised of tetratantalum boride; this compound inhibits radiation from degrading field emitter devices while exerting a predetermined force upon the field emitter devices so as to restrain from damaging the structure of the devices or affect the devices electronic or electrical performance; in another embodiment, the field emitter under the protection of the tetratantalum boride layer is capable of sustaining structural equilibrium; in another embodiment, the field emitter is capable of sustaining structural elasticity under the protection of the tetratantalum boride layer.

A bedside control unit for a hospital bed is operable from a position within the bed and also from a bedside chair. The bedside control unit includes a base which attaches to the frame of a hospital bed. An articulated support is connected to the base which includes a vertically extending support member pivotally connected to the base, and an overhead support arm pivotally connected to an upper end of the support member. The control module is suspended from the overhead support arm. The support arm is moveable between a first position in which the support arm extends over the hospital bed and a second position in which the support arm extends outward from the bed. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the bedside control unit includes data storage means for storing data, such as patient information, and a display for displaying information stored in the control module.

A coaxial laser targeting device is provided for use with x-ray equipment. The device includes an x-ray transparent housing, which encloses a gimbal platform that may be adjustably inclined in any direction. A laser source supplies light through an optical fiber to a lens assembly in the center of the gimbal platform and directs light through a laser emitting aperture in the housing. Three adjustment members arranged in a triangular configuration are used to incline the gimbal platform in any direction relative to the housing to angularly align the laser beam with an x-ray beam emitted by the x-ray equipment so that the beams are coaxial. A visible target created by the laser beam on a patient allows surgeons and the like to accurately perform medical operations without the need to continually operate an x-ray machine.

A method for forming an emitter tip for use in a field emission device. An emitter layer is provided over a substrate. The emitter layer is overlaid with a blanket dielectric which is in turn overlaid by a masking layer. In a first etching operation, a masking island and an underlying dielectric island are formed from the masking layer and the blanket dielectric, respectively. These islands serve as a masking structure during subsequent etching processes by which an emitter tip is formed from the emitter layer. Accordingly, a second etching operation is conducted, whereby an etch chemistry which exhibits both isotropic and anisotropic characteristics is used to remove a portion of the emitter layer by undercutting beneath the masking structure. A third etching operation is conducted, wherein the etch chemistry is substantially more anisotropic than the etch chemistry of the second etching operation. The second and third etches mobilize a portion of the masking layer and form an emitter tip from the emitter layer. The emitter tip has a substantially rectilinear vertical profile.
