A compound type microscope is provided which can observe the measurement sample of an atomic force microscope (AFM) by means of an optical microscope. This compound type microscope is comprised of an optical microscope having an objective and an observation optical system, a cantilever having a reflecting surface and detecting an atomic force, an irradiating optical system for applying a spotlight to the cantilver, a detector for detecting the displacement of reflected light caused by the displacement of the cantilever, and a sample stage for placing a sample thereon. The arrangement can be designed to accommodate the use of a scanning tunnel type microscope (STM) interchangeably with the AFM so that the sample can be measured by the STM instead of by the AFM. To this end, the probe of the STM can be detachably mountable coaxially with respect to the objective of the optical microscope, whereby the probe of the STM and the cantilever of the AFM can be selectively disposed below the objective.

In the self-timer shooting mode, the face detector extracts face data of people in a subject field from an image signal. When the system controller determines, on the basis of the extracted face data and the registered face data, that the photographer can be detected, the apparatus starts countdown for automatic shooting. Consequently, the apparatus can pick up an image of the photographer without fail, and the photographer can securely strike a pose within the countdown period of time. Furthermore, the apparatus can determine the countdown period of time optionally, thereby enabling the self-timer shooting to be executed depending on the personality of the photographer.

The connecting rod has first and second connecting rods, and a guide piston is disposed at a connecting portion between the first and second connecting rods. Deformed portions are formed on a lower end portion of a guide piston and on a balancer weight portion of a crankshaft in order to reduce the whole length of the connecting rod, whereby a bottom dead center of the guide piston is set to a lower position. The engine has improved thermal efficiency by reducing the distance between the crank portion and the piston, increasing the speed of behavior of the piston at a position near a top dead center to reduce thermal energy loss, and preventing generation of knocking.

An object of the present invention is to prevent an increase of the degree of polarization of an output pumping light even if one of pumping light sources has a failure. Laser diodes (30a, 30b) are composed of FP-LDs made of InGaAsP to laser-oscillate at 1480 nm band. The outputs from the laser diodes (30a, 30b) enter a polarizing beam splitter (32) in orthogonal state of polarization and are combined there. The combined light by the polarizing beam splitter (32) enters a depolarizing element (34) and is depolarized there.
