An endoscopic instrument is described having a fluid chamber, a cannula, a shell, a first locking mechanism, and a probe with a second locking mechanism. The fluid chamber has proximal and distal ends. The hollow cannula is coupled to the distal end of the fluid chamber. The port is located at the proximal end of the fluid chamber. The shell houses the fluid chamber, the port, and the first locking mechanism. The probe extends through the port, through the fluid chamber, and through the hollow cannula. In a first fully inserted position, the distal end of the probe extends past the distal end of the cannula. When the probe is partially withdrawn from the shell, the first locking means releasingly engages the second locking means on the probe. Different spring loaded mechanism are described, including one mechanism which is overcome by pulling on the handle of the probe, and another mechanism which requires an active release mechanism.

An endoscopic multiple sample bioptome includes a hollow outer member and an axially displaceable inner member extending therethrough. The proximal ends of the outer and inner members are coupled to an actuator for axially displacing one relative to the other. The distal end of the outer member is coupled to one of a cylinder having a sharp distal edge and a jaw assembly, while the distal end of the inner member is coupled to the other. The jaw assembly includes a pair of opposed, preferably toothed jaw cups each of which is coupled by a resilient arm to a base member. The arms are bent to urge the jaws away from each other. The base member is mounted inside the cylinder and axial movement of the jaw assembly and cylinder relative to each other draws the arms into the cylinder and brings the jaw cups together in a biting action. When the outer member is coupled to the jaw assembly and the inner member is coupled to the cylinder, the distal end of the inner member is preferably coupled to the cylinder by a bent end which is welded to a hole in the cylinder wall. One of the jaws is preferably larger and has a pair of proximal wings. The wings and an upper edge portion of the larger jaw are bent radially inward and enter the smaller jaw when the jaws are closed.

An endoscopic surgical instrument includes a proximal handle with a distally extending lever actuator. The handle and lever actuator are coupled by a tube and push rod to a pair of distal end effectors. The proximal end of the tube is mounted in a bushing having a flange which is freely rotatable within a flange receiving recess in the handle. The proximal end of the push rod extends proximally beyond the bushing and is coupled to the lever actuator by a ball and set screw coupling. The lever actuator preferably extends at least four inches distally from the proximal end of the handle and includes a finger ring near its distal end. The tube is preferably provided with a ferrule immediately distal of the handle for rotating the tube and push rod about the longitudinal axis of the instrument. The ferrule is preferably provided with a distal extension having an annular notch for locking engagement inside another endoscopic instrument. The lever actuator imparts a force to the end effectors which is magnified relative to the force applied to the actuator. The distal extension of the lever actuator and the finger ring allow the instrument to be operated with one finger while the instrument is grasped by the ferrule or mounted inside another endoscopic instrument.

When the handle assembly is actuated, the push/pull wire moves the disk segment and hence the cylindrical member relative to the end effectors and causes the cylindrical member to ride over the arms of the end effectors, thereby forcing the end effectors closed or permitting them to open. Preferably, the disk segment has two curved sides which are coupled to the cylindrical member by crimping, and two substantially parallel sides which provide room for the arms of the end effectors so that the disk segment can move relative to the end effectors. The disk segment also includes a central bore for receiving the push/pull wire.
