Abstract: A fluid storage media includes a plurality of microspheres. Each microsphere includes a porous core with a porous core material and having an exterior surface. A stored fluid is within the porous core. A coating layer covers all of the exterior surface of the porous core. The coating layer includes a coating material which transitions from a first state to a second state, wherein in the first state the coating material is permeable to the stored fluid, and in the second state the material is impermeable to the stored fluid. The coating material in the second state is configured to encapsulate and maintain the stored fluid inside the porous core. A method of making a fluid storage media, a method of delivering a fluid and a method of delivering a biologically active fluid medication to a patient are also disclosed.

Abstract: A method of capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) present in air is provided. The method includes adding a carbon-dioxide-capturing device to a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) system of a building. The carbon-dioxide-capturing device is added to one or both of an air handler and air-distribution ductwork of the HVAC system. The method further includes circulating air including carbon dioxide through the carbon-dioxide-capturing device in the HVAC system. A direct decarbonization system for capturing carbon dioxide present in air is also provided. The system includes an HVAC unit, air-distribution ductwork connected to the HVAC unit, and a carbon-dioxide-capturing device disposed in one or both of the HVAC unit and the air-distribution ductwork. Carbon dioxide gas present in air passing through the HVAC unit or the air-distribution ductwork is removable from the air by the carbon-dioxide-capturing device.

Abstract: A thermal insulation composite is provided. The thermal insulation composite includes a polymer matrix, a thermal conductivity filler, and a physical blowing agent. The polymer matrix includes a thermoset or thermoplastic polymer. The thermal conductivity filler includes a porous-shell hollow-interior glass sphere (PHGS). The physical blowing agent includes an expandable thermoplastic microsphere (EMS). A method of manufacturing the composite is also provided. The method includes the step of combining a polymer matrix, a thermal conductivity filler, and a physical blowing agent to give a pre-heated composition. The method includes heating the pre-heated composition at a softening temperature for a softening time to give a pre-foamed composition. The method also includes heating the pre-foamed composition at a foaming temperature of between 150 to 250° C. for a foaming time of between 3 to 45 minutes to give the composite.

Abstract: A toughened polyester composite comprising: (i) a polyester matrix and (ii) droplets of a high boiling point liquid having a boiling point of at least 140° C. dispersed in said polyester matrix, wherein the high boiling point liquid is present in an amount of 0.1-10 wt % by weight of the toughened polyester composite, and wherein the composite may further include: (iii) a modifier selected from polycarboxylic, polyol, and polyamine compounds, wherein the modifier is present in an amount of 0.1-10 wt % by weight of the toughened polyester composite. Methods for producing the polyester composite are also described.

Abstract: An insulation medium invention includes a plurality of microspheres. Each microsphere comprises a porous core comprising a porous core material and having an exterior surface, a gas within the porous core, and a coating layer coating all of the exterior surface of the porous core. The coating layer comprises a coating material which transitions from a first state to a second state. In the first state, the coating material is permeable to the gas. In the second state the material is impermeable to the gas. The coating material in the second state is configured to encapsulate and maintain partial vacuum of the gas inside the porous core. In one embodiment, in the second state the coating is impermeable to air. Insulated structures, a method of making an insulation medium, a fluid storage media, and a method of delivering a fluid are also disclosed.

Abstract: A moldable thermal insulation composite is provided. The composite includes a thermoset polymer, a curing agent, a thermal conductivity filler, and a physical blowing agent. The thermal conductivity filler includes a hollow-interior glass sphere (HGS) or porous-shell hollow-interior glass sphere (PHGS). The physical blowing agent includes an expandable thermoplastic microsphere (EMS). The thermal conductivity filler is present in the composite in an amount of 0.1 to 49.9 wt. %. The physical blowing agent is present in the composite in an amount of 0.1 to 49.9 wt. %. The thermal conductivity filler and the physical blowing agent are present in the composite in a combined amount of 20 to 50 wt. %. A method of manufacturing a thermal insulation composite is also provided.

Abstract: A method for electrochemically reducing carbon dioxide includes the step of providing a liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide mixture comprising liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide, water, a phase transfer catalyst, and an ion conducting salt. A potential difference is applied across a portion of the liquid or supercritical carbon dioxide mixture to cause the reduction of carbon dioxide with protons from the water. A reactor for electrochemically reducing carbon dioxide is also disclosed.
