A method for nondestructively and accurately determining the stress of a fabricated semiconductor chip soldered, brazed or otherwise bonded to a submount using optical microscopy and finite element analysis. Deformations on a top surface of the semiconductor chip are first examined using optical microscopy. The deformations are then correlated using finite element analysis to the stress on the semiconductor chip caused by the soldering process. If the stress is determined to be within an acceptable range of measurement, then the semiconductor chip will have been properly soldered to the submount and can be used.

The faceplate includes a plate arrangement of at least two mutually parallel plates each having an array of fixed apertures. At least one of the plates is movable in translational motion such that the at least two plates collectively define an array of adjustable-size apertures that can open wide enough to readily receive bare optical fiber and then decrease in size to immobilize the received optical fiber.

The all-pass optical filter reduces the dispersion of optical pulses by applying a desired phase response to optical pulses transmitted therethrough. The all-pass optical filter also has a frequency independent amplitude response. The all-pass optical filter has a structure which includes at least one feedback path, a splitter/combiner, an input port, and an output port.

In accordance with the invention, an optical multiplexer includes at least one reconfigurable add-drop unit that can add-drop one channel out of a large set by switching the light path through one of a set of fixed add-drop filters. Reconfiguration is done by switching from the add-drop filter path to a bypass path, changing to a different add-drop filter and then switching back. The phase delay of the bypass path is adjusted to maintain nearly maximum transmission during switching. The selection among add-drop filters is done by sliding an integrated optic chip with the set of add-drop filters between input and output waveguides. The reconfigurable add-drop multiplexer unit is latchable, passive between reconfigurations, and has low intrinsic insertion loss. Plural units in series can add/drop plural channels.
