摘要:
A vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsion which is about 65-70% solids and has a viscosity of less than about 3,500 is disclosed. The emulsion is prepared by copolymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene monomers in the presence of a stabilizing system consisting essentially of 2-4 wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a polyvinyl alcohol having a 100-600 degree of polymerization and 2-4wt %, based on vinyl acetate monomer, of a surfactant. Such emulsions demonstrate an improved speed of set as an adhesive.

C. and bringing the reaction mixture to a reaction temperature of from 45.degree.-85.degree. C. within a period of not more than 2 hours with the reaction temperature exceeding the initiation temperature by at least 15.degree. C.,(3) adding the olefinically unsaturated carboxylic acid monomer and the polyolefinically unsaturated monomer at a substantially uniform rate such that the major portion of the carboxylic acid and polyolefinically unsaturated monomers has been added by the time the alkyl acrylate and vinyl ester content as free monomer in the reaction mixture has been reduced to a level of less than about 10 wt % of the mixture, and(4) continuing polymerization of the reaction mixture until the alkyl acrylate and vinyl ester content as free monomer in the reaction mixture is reduced below about 1 wt %.

This invention pertains to aqueous emulsions containing water insoluble, vinyl polymer particles containing polymerized N-vinyl formamide (NVF) units converted to water insoluble vinyl acetate polymers containing cationic, amine functional units. These latex dispersions are prepared by the emulsion polymerization of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer and N-vinyl formamide. Preferably, vinyl acetate, optionally with other ethylenically unsaturated monomers, are used to form the copolymer. The copolymer then is selectively hydrolyzed via acid hydrolysis of the N-vinyl formamide group to form water insoluble polymer particles.

This invention relates to an improved pressure sensitive adhesive comprising a polymer system which has excellent tack, peel and shear adhesion strengths. The improvement resides in the polymer, with the polymer system being formed by emulsion polymerizing an unsaturated ester, an unsaturated carboxylic acid and a polyfunctional monomer in the presence of a stabilizer system comprising an ethoxylated acetylenic tertiary glycol and polyvinyl alcohol.

This invention relates to an improved continuous process for producing vinyl acetate-ethylene copolymer emulsions. The improvement for continuous polymerization of vinyl acetate and ethylene comprises continuously charging a reaction mixture containing vinyl acetate and ethylene to a polymerization vessel, conducting an initial polymerization of the vinyl acetate and ethylene in the presence of a seed latex under ethylene pressure and continuously removing the thus formed latex from the initial polymerization vessel at an unreacted vinyl acetate monomer content from 5-20% by weight of the latex and then effecting a post polymerization of the unreacted vinyl acetate at an ethylene pressure of not more than about 300 psia until the unreacted vinyl acetate in the latex is less than 1% by weight.

Aqueous vinyl ester/acrylate copolymer emulsions possessing enhanced wet pick strength in paper coating compositions comprise a vinyl ester/acrylate copolymer colloidally dispersed in an aqueous medium, the copolymer consisting essentially of (a) a vinyl ester of a C.sub.1 -C.sub.12 alkanoic acid, (b) 2 to 50 wt % of an alkyl acrylate, and (c) 0.1 to 10 wt % of an ethylenically unsaturated mono- or dicarboxylic acid or half ester thereof. The copolymer is prepared by an aqueous emulsion polymerization process comprising the use of a stabilizer system consisting essentially of an alkylphenoxy polyethoxy ethanol and an anionic surfactant and, in the preferred embodiment, the use of a seeding procedure.
