A fault detector for a triplexed mechanical or hydromechanical system which provides for improvement in cost, reliability and weight over previously known balance beam arrangements for achieving redundant two-channel operation to provide a fail-operating first failure mode for operation of aircraft components which require reliable operation for flight safety. The fault detector for a triplexed mechanical or hydromechanical system has a tripodal summing member which receives three mechanical position signals in three different channels with the tripodal summing member retaining a position perpendicular to the force transmitted by the tripodal summing member in response to the position signals and tipping when one of the input signals deviates significantly from the other two. A structure for detecting a malfunction senses a greater amount of movement of the tripodal summing member at its connection to the mechanical position signal which is malfunctioning to provide an indication as to which mechanical position signal is faulty. In response to detection of the faulty operation, a mechanism disconnects the channel having the faulty operation. An alignment structure is operable to restore the tripodal summing member to its normal perpendicular position to enable continued operation by means of the mechanical position signals which are still accurate.

Thrust bearing failure in clutches is avoided in a clutch construction including a housing 10 with first and second coaxial shafts 24, 32 and a clutch pack 34 interconnecting the shafts 24 and 32 for coupling and decoupling the same. A spring 50 is utilized to engage the clutch pack 34 to couple the shafts 24 and 32 while a motor 82, 96 is utilized to decouple the shafts by releasing compression on the clutch pack 34. This is accomplished by moving a thrust bearing 76 to engage a reaction plate 48 forming part of the clutch pack 34 to move the same away from the other reaction plate 34 of the clutch pack to disengage the clutch. The thrust bearing 76 is wholly out of the load path of the clutch when the clutch is engaged.

The actuator includes a housing, an output shaft mounted for rotation in the housing about an axis, and a drive member. The output shaft includes an external, helical spline. The drive member includes an internal helical spline engaged with the external helical spline to transmit a drive torque to the output shaft. The internal and external splines have sufficient length along the axis to allow translation of the drive member along the axis relative to the output shaft between a first position where the drive member can transmit a drive torque to the output shaft to rotate the output shaft about the axis and a second position where the drive member is restrained from transmitting additional drive torque to the output shaft.

A load limiter for preventing stall torque from being transmitted from a power drive unit to the flight control surfaces of an aircraft. The present invention provides such a load limiter in a package having lower weight and smaller spacial requirements than has been heretofore possible. The power drive unit of the aircraft generates torque which is transmitted from a rotating input shaft to a worm gear, to a helical gear, to a ball screw, and to the flight control surface of the aircraft. If the flight control surface becomes jammed or otherwise prevented from movement, the ball screw, and consequently the helical gear, stop rotating. However, the stall torque of the power drive unit will continue to cause the input shaft to rotate, which will in turn cause the worm gear to rotate and interact with the helical gear. Since the helical gear cannot move, the helical gear will cause the worm gear to axially translate relative to the input shaft. The worm gear is normally prevented from such movement by compression and tension springs laterally flanking the worm gear, but by sizing the springs to be overcome by the level of the stall torque, one of the springs, depending on the direction of rotation of the input shaft, will compress to allow the worm gear to axially move and thus cause a toothed plated attached to the worm gear to engage a mating toothed plated fixed to the actuator housing. The engaged plates therefore ground the stall torque to the housing to prevent damage to the flight control surface and its transmission. The load limiter is disengaged by reversing the direction of rotation of the input shaft.

A compact ball screw type actuator having both load limiting capability above a pre-determined value and position holding capability at all load values above, below and at the pre-determined value is provided through use of a resettable force limiting assembly acting directly on an element of the ball screw, in conjunction with a friction drag device operating directly upon an input shaft operatively coupled through a crossed-helical gear train to the ball screw. The force limiter utilizes axial force on the ball screw above the pre-determined value for engaging clutch teeth to limit the force applied by the ball screw, or to provide the position holding function and for preventing backdriving of the actuator. For force levels at or below the pre-determined value, the input drag device provides the position holding function.
