    摘要: In a magnetic oxide thin film, at least three phases including a layered antiferromagnetic metallic phase, an antiferromagnetic charge-ordered insulating phase, and a ferromagnetic metallic phase coexist. A magnetic memory element includes the magnetic oxide thin film and an electrode. Therefore, the magnetic oxide thin film and the magnetic memory element can attain, in a form of thin-film (which is necessary to form a device), (i) an enormous resistance change and history dependence at a low resistance and (ii) history dependence of magnetization under a weak magnetic field, without narrowing a range of operating temperature.

    摘要: A thin-film, horizontal balance instrument is provided for measuring surface tension (surface energy) of thin films suspended on a liquid substrate. The balance includes a support bearing and an optical feedback arrangement for wide-range, high sensitivity measurements. The force on the instrument is balanced by an electromagnet, the current through the magnet providing a measure of the force applied to the instrument. A novel float construction is also disclosed.

    摘要: An optical waveguide coupler relaxes a phase matching condition and facilitates coupling between an optical waveguide and a resonator. Light in a multimode optical waveguide is coupled directly to a microsphere resonator via evanescent light. Under a nonresonance condition, influence of the microsphere resonator is small, and light propagation through the multimode optical waveguide is not influenced. However, since the intensity of the light stored in the microsphere resonator is high under the resonance condition, even if the coupling efficiency is low, the microsphere resonator outputs light of approximately the same power as that of the light in the multimode optical waveguide. Therefore, a strong coupling condition is always satisfied, and the optical waveguide coupler functions as a filter due to the interference between the light in the multimode optical waveguide and the light that has passed through the microsphere resonator.

    摘要: The present invention provides a scanning probe microscope that is straightforward to use under sever environments. Optical fiber irradiates light from a laser diode towards the surface of a cantilever. The irradiated light is converged by a lens so as to irradiate the surface of the cantilever. Light reflected from the surface of the cantilever is focused by the lenses and inputted to optical fibers. Light passing through the optical fibers is then received by the photodiodes. Inclination of the cantilever is then detected based on changes in the amount of light received.

    摘要: Instrument for measuring the shear modulus of a monomolecular film comprises a circular trough having inwardly sloping sides containing a liquid for supporting the monolayer on the surface thereof; a circular rotor suspended above the trough such that the lower surface of the rotor contacts the surface of the liquid, positioned such that the axis of the rotor is concentric with the axis of the trough and freely rotable about its axis; apparatus for hydrostatically compressing the monolayer in the annular region formed between the rotor and the sides of the trough; and apparatus for rotating the trough about its axis. Preferably, hydrostatic compression of the monolayer is achieved by removing liquid from the bottom of the trough (decreasing the surface area) while raising the trough vertically along its axis to maintain the monolayer at a constant elevation (and maintain rotor contact). In order to measure viscosity, a apparatus for rotating the rotor about its axis is added to the apparatus.
