摘要: After an engine 1 has started to operate, a state in which a humidity represented by an output of a humidity sensor 19 downstream of a hydrocarbon adsorbent 7 takes a minimum value is sequentially searched for, and a timing at which the humidity changes from the minimum value to a monotonously increasing state is grasped as a timing at which the adsorption of moisture and hydrocarbons by the hydrocarbon adsorbent 7 is saturated. After the engine has started to operate, a parameter representing an integrated amount of moisture given to the hydrocarbon adsorbent 7 by the exhaust gas is sequentially generated, and a deteriorated state of the hydrocarbon adsorbent 7 is evaluated based on the value of the parameter at the timing at which the adsorption is saturated. The deteriorated state of the hydrocarbon absorbent can thus accurately be evaluated by an inexpensive arrangement which employs the humidity sensor 19 disposed downstream of the hydrocarbon adsorbent 7.

摘要: An adsorbent state determining apparatus is provided for accurately determining the state of an adsorbent including a deterioration as well as for allowing for recovery of the adsorbent if its adsorbent performance can be restored. The adsorbent state determining apparatus determines the state of an adsorbent for adsorbing hydrocarbons contained in exhaust gases. An upstream and a downstream temperature sensor are provided at upstream and downstream locations of the adsorbent in an exhaust system for detecting temperatures of exhaust gases upstream and downstream of the adsorbent. An engine water temperature sensor detects an operating state of the engine. An ECU estimates the temperature of the exhaust gas which should be detected downstream of the adsorbent during adsorption of the adsorbent based on the upstream temperature detected by the upstream temperature sensor and an engine water temperature of the engine detected by the engine water temperature sensor. The ECU then compares the estimated downstream temperature with the detected downstream temperature detected by the downstream temperature sensor during adsorption of the adsorbent to determine the adsorption state of the adsorbent.

摘要: In a direct injection spark ignition engine which is operable in lean-burn operation modes including a pre-mixture combustion mode and a stratified combustion operation mode and a stoichiometric air/fuel ratio operation mode, which are different in the desired air/fuel ratio. The degradation of combustion state is detected through misfire detection and if it is determined to be degraded, the desired air/fuel ratio, the EGR flow rate and the ignition timing are changed when the engine is operated in the stratified combustion operation mode, while the desired air/fuel ratio, the EGR flow rate and the purge flow rate are changed when the engine is operated in the pre-mixture combustion operation mode, thereby ensuring to suppress the combustion state degradation effectively.

摘要: A fault determining apparatus for an exhaust passage switching valve which is capable of directly, rapidly and properly determining a fault in an exhaust passage switching valve, under conditions such as immediately after the start of an internal combustion engine, in which the switching valve should be essentially operated, without the need for setting a special fault determining mode. The fault determining apparatus determines a fault in the exhaust passage switching valve for switching an exhaust passage of exhaust gases discharged from an internal combustion engine between a main exhaust passage having a three-way catalyst and a bypass exhaust passage having filled in an intermediate portion thereof an adsorbent capable of adsorbing hydrocarbons and moisture in the exhaust gases in accordance with an activated state of the three-way catalyst. The fault determining apparatus comprises a humidity sensor for detecting a humidity of the exhaust gases introduced into the bypass exhaust passage, and an ECU for determining a fault in the exhaust passage switching valve based on the result of detection performed by the humidity sensor when the exhaust passage should have been switched to the bypass exhaust passage by the exhaust passage switching valve.

摘要: A system for purifying exhaust gas generated by an internal combustion engine having a bypass exhaust gas passage branching from an exhaust pipe which is opened or closed by a switch-over valve, and an adsorbent which adsorbs unburneds component in the exhaust gas installed at the bypass exhaust passage. In the system, when the engine operation is within a high engine speed and high load region, the switch-over valve is operated to open the bypass exhaust gas passage to reduce noise due to switch-over valve chattering, etc. Similarly, the bypass exhaust gas passage is opened at that range, when the exhaust gas temperature is greater or equal to a predetermined value, to introduce high temperature exhaust gas to burn away cloggy material adhered to the adsorbent which would otherwise deteriorate or degrade the adsorbent.

摘要: A characteristic change of a humidity sensor 19 is detected based on the transitional characteristics of output data of the humidity sensor 19 with respect to integrated moisture quantity data representative of an integrated amount of moisture that is supplied to an HG adsorbent 7 by an exhaust gas after an engine 1 has started to operate. A parameter for grasping a state of the HC adsorbent 7 is corrected. The state, such as a deteriorated state or the like, of a hydrocarbon adsorbent (HC adsorbent) is properly monitored while compensating for the effect of the characteristic change of the humidity sensor and the effect of variations of the characteristics of individual units of the humidity sensor.
