A photographic printer according to the present invention can automatically print films of an arbitrary size by directly and automatically detecting image data of a film negative to discriminate whether the firm negative is of a full or half size, and switches the conveying direction of the film based upon the result of the above discrimination, and adjusts the aperture of the mask at a printing unit. The method according to the present invention can detect and position frames at a high speed and high accuracy and yet with a simple structure which includes the steps of detecting image data of an original film, and determining a feeding length with the size data and edge detection of the original film and positioning imaged frames.

The temperature gradient is established at the boundary region between the primary and secondary recrystallized regions, with the result that highly oriented (110) [001] secondary recrystallization nuclei preferentially are caused to develop.

A printer processor, a film processor, and a densitometer are connected to a personal computer via a port controller. To diagnose the operational condition of photographic apparatus, the apparatus forms a check sample. The check sample is sent to the densitometer to fetch the measured density data into the personal computer. If the operational condition of the photographic apparatus is abnormal, the personal computer fetches the operational data under management in the photographic apparatus to determine a countermeasure for the abnormal state. The countermeasure is transferred to the photographic apparatus to adjust the adjust failure element automatically. In order to control a plurality of lab shops remotely, each lab shop is provided with a sub-computer connected to the photographic apparatus. The headquarters are provided with a main computer storing therein a management program. The main computer fetches the data of the sub-computer via a communication line. In accordance with the fetched data, the headquarters control the quality, production state, and stock stage of consumable goods at each lab shop remotely. The port controller finds the idle time of a CPU at each lab shop, and fetches the data from the photographic apparatus during the idle time.

Disclosed is a collating device for collating the images on a photographic film with those printed on a printing paper from the photographic film while conveying the film and the printing paper. The collating device includes a reading device for reading a frame number for identifying the frame image on the film, and a printing device for printing the frame number which has been read by the reading device on the printing paper on which has been printed the image on the film which corresponds to that frame member. The frame numbers of the film are printed on the printing paper on which have been printed the images on the film. In consequence, the print images on the printing paper are easily made to correspond to the corresponding frame images on the film, and designation of the frames is facilitated.

A proper layout of a composed image is simulated and conformed on a monitor screen before printing the composed image. Framing lines are displayed to define a printing area on the monitor screen according to a desired printing magnification. Two originals, which are complementarily covered, are separately placed in a printing station of a printer and shifted so as to display their images at a desired location with respect to the framing lines on the monitor screen, thereby simulating a desired layout of the two images as a composed image.

In printing photographic film, photographic images or defocused images due to improper adjustment of focus at the time of photography should be eliminated from printing. There have been proposed various methods for the purpose. The typical prior art system is defective in that as its aperture has two different photometric systems, the sampling positions at larger and smaller spots should be synchronized to make the system complicated and bulky. The prior art system is further detrimental in that it has only one function, and therefore sensors for image photometry and frame position detection should be provided separately. This invention uses an image sensor having smaller picture elements for detecting image information, and spots for detecting defocused image are formed by the image sensor. This invention system therefore can precisely detect defocused images without necessity of plural photometric systems, and therefore can control exposure amount as well as detection of frame images. This invention can simplify the system, lower the manufacture cost, and obtain better precision for detection/control.
