A misfire-detecting system for an internal combustion engine detects occurrence of a misfire in the engine, based on voltage between both ends of a spark plug assumed when sparking discharge takes place at the spark plug. A diode is arranged in an ignition secondary circuit of the engine, for checking reverse current flowing in the circuit in a direction reverse to the direction of flow of current occurring when spark ignition takes place at the spark plug. An ECU detects reverse current flowing in the ignition secondary circuit, and detects an abnormality of the diode, based on the detected reverse current.

A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine having a plurality of cylinders and a cylinder halting mechanism. The cylinder halting mechanism switches between an all-cylinder operation in which all of the plurality of cylinders are operated and a partial-cylinder operation in which at least one of the plurality of cylinders is halted. Operating parameters of the engine and the atmospheric pressure are detected. The cylinder halting mechanism is controlled to perform the all-cylinder operation or the partial-cylinder operation according to the operating parameters of the engine and the detected atmospheric pressure.

Absorbent film which has a great adhesion, a great mechanical strength and a high resistivity to heat and other radiation and which is applicable to sun glasses, color filters, phase plates used for the differential phase method, apodization filters and the like. The absorbent film is produced by mixing together powdered Ti, powdered Cr and powdered MgF.sub.2 into the form of a powdered mixture or shaping them into a compressed mass of mixture, thereafter vacuum-evaporating said mixture onto a predetermined base material such as lens glass to thereby provide a refractive factor of about 1.52 and an absorption coefficient of about 0.01 to 0.4. At least one layer of such absorbent film may be used to form a multi-layer film structure.

A cylinder head structure for a multiple cylinder engine, comprising, at least for each of its cylinders (1) located at either longitudinal end of its cylinder bank: a combustion chamber (13) defined by the cylinder and a piston received therein; an intake passage (18) communicated with an intake manifold (20) at its one end and with said combustion chamber at its other end; and exhaust passage (19) communicated with an exhaust manifold (21) at its one end and with said combustion chamber at its other end; at least one of said intake passage and said exhaust passage being curved toward a longitudinally central part of said cylinder bank as it extends from its other end to its one end. Hence, the size and weight of the intake manifold and/or the exhaust manifold can be reduced. In particular, if the passage is communicated with the combustion chamber by a pair of ports (14a, 14b, 15a, 15b, 14a', 14b', 15a', 15b', 58Ea, 58Eb, 58 Ia, 58Ib, 114a', 114b', 115a', 115b') controlled by valves and arranged along a longitudinal direction of the cylinder bank and different flow rates are assigned to these ports depending the operating conditions of the engine, a significant improvement in the performance of the engine may be attained by symmetrically arranging these ports with respect to a longitudinal center of the cylinder bank.

A medical tool position-confirming system is provided with a medical tool 1 capable of emitting light, the medical tool 1 including a luminescent agent emitting near infrared fluorescence when irradiated with near infrared light having a wavelength within the range of 600 to 1400 nm, the luminescent agent being applied on a surface of the medical tool or kneaded into the medical tool, a light source 3 for directing the near infrared light 2 toward the medical tool 1, a camera 4 for receiving the near infrared fluorescence emitted from the luminescent agent of the medical tool 1, and a monitor 6 for displaying an image 5 taken by the camera 4. The position of the medical tool such as a shunt tube can be confirmed without using an X-ray.
