An image processing apparatus which is capable of preventing the display of an operation item, such as an icon, from hindering user's viewing an image which the user desires to view. A distance and position-detecting section and a system controller detect a distance between a screen and an operation element. The system controller displays at least one operation candidate item on the screen when the detected distance becomes not larger than a first threshold distance. Further, when the detected distance becomes not larger than the first predetermined threshold distance, the system controller changes a display form of the operation candidate item depending on the detected distance and displays the operation candidate item as an operable item.

An electronic system comprising an image pickup unit 1, a computer 2, and communication terminals for connecting the unit and the computer, such as infrared communication ports 6, 10, a card slot 8, and serial communication terminals 5,9 wherein the necessary image data is allowed to be produced from the unit 1 and transmitted to the computer through the communication terminals. The computer communicates with the image pick up unit by examining the port of each communication means in order to recognize whether a connected unit is the image pickup unit or a foreign unit and to determine and store the communication speed for each communication port. The image data and memory space information is then automatically transmitted to the computer and displayed on a device connected to said computer.

For this purpose, each device unit of the system includes a communication circuit arranged to transmit information of electric power consumption and an operating state of the device unit detachably connected to the control device, The control device, includes a communication circuit arranged to receive the information on the device unit from the device unit, and a control circuit arranged to compare the information of electric power consumption and the operating state received by the communication circuit with information of the amount of electric power which can be supplied to the device unit and to send the control signal to the device unit for partly stopping the function of the device unit according to the result of comparison.

An image pickup apparatus which records a digital image signal by taking a picture of an object and which transfers the recorded digital image signal to an external device. The apparatus includes a buffer memory, an image saving memory, an image memory accumulation state judgment unit, and a transfer unit. The buffer memory is adapted to temporarily accumulate the digital image signal obtained by picture taking. The image saving memory is adapted to save the digital image signal. The image memory accumulation state judgment unit is adapted to judge whether or not a new digital image signal can be accumulated in the buffer memory. The transfer unit is adapted to transfer to the external device the digital image signal accumulated in the buffer memory if the image memory accumulation state judgment unit determines that any new digital image signal cannot be accumulated in the buffer memory.

In an image sensing apparatus using an image sensing device, such as a CCD, to be used by connecting to an external device, such as a computer, an operating rate of the CCD is changed in accordance with a rate at which the computer receives image signals from the image sensing apparatus. Further, when the operating rate of the CCD is changed, a proper exposure value is conjectured to obtain an image sensed at a proper exposure on the basis of operating rates of the CCD before and after the operating rate is changed, and a proper exposure value of the CCD before the operating rate is changed.

An image capturing apparatus having a plurality of communication modes comprises an image capturing unit adapted to capture an object image and obtain image data, and a control unit adapted to control the image capturing apparatus, wherein the plurality of communication modes include a host mode in which the image capturing apparatus is able to communicate with a plurality of external devices and a client mode in which the image capturing apparatus is disable to simultaneously communicate with the plurality of external devices, and wherein the control unit is able to automatically switch the image capturing apparatus to the host mode after an image capturing instruction is applied to the image capturing unit.
