    摘要: A method for making a cross-linked polymer network is disclosed herein. A mixture is formed of i) an electro-optic chromophore, ii) any of a cross-linkable monomer or a cross-linkable oligomer, and iii) an initiator in a solvent. Poling of the electro-optic chromophore is initiated by exposing the mixture to an electric field. While the mixture is being exposed to the electric field, the mixture is subjected to ultraviolet light or heat to initiate cross-linking of the any of the cross-linkable monomer or the cross-linkable oligomer to form a matrix of the cross-linked polymer network.

    摘要: A slot-line waveguide optical switch system and method are disclosed. An optical switch system can include a slot-line waveguide optical switch that includes a plurality of wall portions that are each formed from a high refractive-index material and that are arranged to form a channel portion comprising an electro-optic material interposed to extend between the plurality of wall portions. The channel portion can include an input channel to receive an input optical signal and plural output channels to receive the input optical signal from the input channel. A channel switching system can provide a voltage to an electrode coupled to a corresponding wall portion to change a relative refractive index in the output channels via the electro-optic material and thereby switch the input optical signal to one of the output channels.

An example of an integrated sensor includes a flexible substrate, and an array of spaced apart sensing members formed on a surface of the flexible substrate. Each of the spaced apart sensing members includes a plurality of polygon assemblies. The polygon assemblies are arranged in a controlled pattern on the surface of the flexible substrate such that each of the plurality of polygon assemblies is a predetermined distance from each other of the plurality of polygon assemblies, and each of the plurality of polygon assemblies including collapsible signal amplifying structures controllably positioned in a predetermined geometric shape.

    摘要: A surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) apparatus employs a nanorod in an indentation in a surface of a substrate. The SERS apparatus includes the nanorod having a tip at a free end opposite to an end of the nanorod that is supported by the substrate indentation. The indentation has a tapered profile and supports the nanorod at a bottom of the indentation. The free end of the nanorod extends away from the indentation bottom. The SERS apparatus further includes a Raman-active material at a surface of one or both of the nanorod and the indentation. The indentation and the nanorod facilitate one or both of production and detection of a Raman scattering signal emitted by an analyte in a vicinity of the nanorod and indentation.

The laser communication system includes a laser receiver system to receive a frequency-shift keyed (FSK) optical signal encoded with a plurality of data signals. The laser receiver system including an FSK differential detection system that includes a plurality of differential detection filters that can each receive the FSK optical signal and generate an output. The FSK differential detection system can demodulate the FSK optical signal into a multi-bit digital code corresponding to a frequency of the FSK optical signal based on the output of each of the plurality of differential detection filters.

    摘要: A reconfigurable surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) apparatus, system and method employ a stimulus responsive material to move nanorods of a plurality between inactive and active configurations. The apparatus includes the plurality of nanorods and the stimulus responsive material. The system further includes a Raman signal detector. The method of reconfigurable SERS includes providing the plurality of nanorods and exposing the stimulus responsive material to a stimulus. The exposure causes a change in one or more of a size, a shape and a volume of the stimulus responsive material that moves the nanorods between the inactive and active configurations. The active configuration facilitates one or both of production and detection of a Raman scattering signal emitted by the analyte.
