A lubricating oil soluble compound suitable for use as a dispersant additive is obtainable by reacting at elevated temperature a polyepoxide with a dispersant having at least one reactive nitrogen-containing moiety. Intermediates of the general formula IV ##STR1## where Y' is a group derived from the reaction of the polyepoxide with reactive nitrogen-containing moieties (i.e. primary or secondary amines) are novel.The process for preparing the lubricating oil soluble compounds comprises at least 2 sequential steps.Lubricating oil compositions comprises a major proportion of lubricating oil and a minor proportion of the lubricating oil soluble compounds.

A lubricating oil additive suitable as an extreme pressure/anti-wear additive comprises the product obtainable by reacting at elevated temperature a mixture comprising (i) sulphur, (ii) at least one C.sub.10 to C.sub.100 unsaturated carboxylic acid, and (iii) at least one hydrocarbyl-substituted phenol, the amount of (iii) in the mixture being 15 to 65% w/w based on the combined weight of (i) (ii) and (iii). The reaction mixture can further comprise an olefin and/or, a mercaptan and/or a lubricating oil as a diluent. The additive is also useful as an anti-oxidant. Additive concentrates and lubricating oil compositions comprise a lubricating oil and the additives of the present invention.

C. and at atmospheric or elevated total pressure a molecular oxygen-containing gaseous oxidant at a gas flow rate greater than 10 liters cm.sup.-2 h.sup.-1 measured at the operating pressure. The oxidized polyisobutenes can be reacted for example with an aliphatic polyamine to produce a lubricating oil additive or with an aliphatic polyamide and formaldehyde to produce a fuels additive.

A process for producing a dispersant/VI improver for use in finished lubricating oil compositions comprises reacting in a normally liquid substantially inert organic solvent (a) a copolymer of an olefin and a monomer having the structure (I), wherein X and X.sup.1 are the same or different provided that at least one of X and X.sup.1 is such that the copolymer can function as carboxylic acylating agent, (b) a succinimide, and (c) a primary or secondary amine or a mixture thereof. Preferred copolymers comprise maleic anhydride as a comonomer. In a preferred embodiment of the invention, the amine is a monoamine, and a polyamine is also added; the monoamine and polyamine are added to the reaction medium prior to addition of the succinimide.
